Required Text: Now and Then by Neil Reich (St. Martin's Press)

Recommended: An English/English dictionary (such as Oxford or Longman works designed for learners of English as an additonal language, or a dictionary designed for native English speakers)

Course Description: This is a 6 hour/week reading and writing course designed to help you improve reading and writing skills needed for university work. You will work on reading skills; vocabulary acquisition; paraphrasing and summarizing; and the organization, style and development of essays.

In order to pass this class, you must be able to:

almost always communicate ideas clearly on the sentence, paragraph and composition level in a final draft.

write the final draft of a composition equivalent to a 5.5 on the ELI scale

write a summary from a non-simplified article.

read and digest information from a non-simplified article of at least 5 pages.

read a non-technical text at a minimum of 140 wpm with at least 70% comprehension (with 200 wpm as a goal).

Grading: You will be graded from A-F. You must receive a C (75%) or above to pass the course. When grading, I will take into account:
