How to Use Information Access Full-Text Databases (IAC)

1. Access "OSU Libraries Research Databases" at http://www.orst.edu/dept/library/database.htm

2. Select "Information Access Full-text Databases."

3. Then select "Web Access to Academic Index and General Business File."

4. Click on Proceed.

5. Click on "Expanded Academic ASAP."

6. Let's say your subject is "immigration." Make sure the "Subject Guide" button is selected, then click in the entry box, enter "immigration", and click on "Submit Search." (You can also search by key words, which are words in titles, authors, abstracts, published works etc., plus words from these areas also indexed in the Subject Guide. You can also use key word searching to combine terms using logical operators, such as "AND" "OR" "NOT".)

7. The subject "Immigration" is not actually indexed in the database, but EasyTrac has determined that the subject "Emigration and Immigration" is equivalent and EasyTrac links you to that subject. Click on "See Emigration and Immigration."

8. To further refine your search, take a look at the 80 subdivisions of the Subject, so click on "See also 80 subdivisions."

9. Scroll down the list of subdivisions to see if one suits your topic. For example, if you wish to research the economic impact of immigrants on the American economy, perhaps the subtopic "economic aspects" will be useful. Click on "economic aspects."

10. There are many articles on "economic aspects of immigration." Perhaps you want to further limit your search. For example, you may wish to limit your search to only the articles in the index which contain the full-text. Click on "Limit Search."

11.Click on the box next to "to references with Full Text available" and then click on the "Submit" button. You will now have a list of only the articles with full-text on your subject.

12. Of the articles on the economic aspect of immigration, you now have the names of only those that have full-text. If you want to see the first article, "Toward a New Immigration Policy," click on the "View" button.

13.You now have all the article. If you think you want to use it, you have retrieval choices. Click on the "Retrieve" button.

14.Select "Browser Print."

(You can also cut and paste into a word-processing program and save it to your disk.)

15.When you select "print," you will get the print dialog screen for your printer. Follow the usual steps for printing out a document.
