CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State 174-pounder Clint Wilson knocked off his second straight nationally-ranked wrestler Monday night as the 10th-ranked Beavers beat Cal Poly 42-9 in a Pacific-10 dual meet at Gill Coliseum. Wilson pinned David Wells, ranked 10th in the country by InterMat, in 6:42; that was one of six pins recorded by OSU.

OSU (3-2 overall, 2-1 Pacific-10) finished a stretch of four dual meets in three days, with three of those duals coming against nationally-ranked teams. The Beavers now break for the holidays, then return to action at the Texas Duals tournament on Jan. 2.

Against Cal Poly (0-1, 0-1) OSU got pins from Wilson, 165-pounder Isaac Wood, 197-pounder Shane Zajac, heavyweight Mat Orndorff, 125-pounder Nathan Navarro and 149-pounder Oscar Wood. The pins by Isaac Wood, Zajac, Orndorff and Oscar Wood all came in the first period of their matches.

"I thought we wrestled more aggressively tonight," OSU head coach Joe Wells said. "Sometimes, that's because of the opponent. I thought we looked better and responded better. We looked more aggressive, more fit.

"There were a couple of mismatches. And where those occurred, we went out right away and put guys on their back."

Oscar Wood, the nation's top-ranked 149-pounder, improved to 12-0 with seven pins this season. Orndorff, ranked fifth nationally, is 11-3 with seven pins; Zajac, ranked sixth nationally, is 12-2 with three pins.

Wilson capped quite a weekend by knocking off Wells. On Sunday, he'd beaten ninth-ranked Delaney Berger of Minnesota. Wilson called that win a learning experience rather than a reason to celebrate; he felt the same about Monday's win over Wells, who was also ranked third nationally at 165 pounds by Amateur Wrestling News.

"It's not national tournament time yet - we can't stop now," Wilson said. "We've got to get up and run Tuesday morning. We're not going to relax. We've got to pick up the pace."

Wells noted that OSU had a history of difficulty against Wells, having tried a number of wrestlers against him in the past.

"He's a difficult kid to wrestle," Wells said. "He's got an unusual style . . . that was great, it was a big match for Clint to pin him."

Wilson trailed Wells 5-1 early in the third period, and was still down 6-5 after scoring a takedown with 39 seconds left. He managed to get Wells on his back, though, and had near-fall points coming before finally getting the pin.

"I had a great shot at him earlier, and he funked me," Wilson said. "He knows how to get out of crap like that. I finally got in solid enough that the funk didn't matter. You've got to be careful with people like that, or they'll catch you."

Isaac Wood scored the quickest pin of the night for the Beavers, needing just 18 seconds to beat Jason Gutierrez. Zajac's pin took only 36 seconds.

Oregon State 141-pounder Shane Cunanan suffered a knee injury as he was being pinned by Cal Poly's James Gross. The severity of the injury was not known Monday night.
