OSU Wrestling News from Les Gutches
[Updated: Tuesday, December 3, 2002]

OSU Fans,

Training camp is going well here in Colorado Springs, we've been working hard and the team is healthy.

We've completed three of the four training cycles. Each training cycle consists of three days -- two-a-day workouts.

We usually are on our own in the mornings to lift weights, run, drill, etc. . . . The evening workout is a hard wrestling practice, lasting around 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Practices start out with a warm up and drill and then matches, situations or timed periods with conditioning at the end.

We get a rest day between each of the training cycles. The last cycle starts on Tuesday and ends on Thursday. We have a few days off after that to go home and tie up loose ends and pay bills before we leave for overseas. We leave on the 30th for Italy, where we will be doing our acclimation training. This week in Italy before we depart for Iran will help us get used to the time change. USA Wrestling will fly a special training partner for each of the world team members for our training in Italy. I chose my brother, Jason. In Italy, we will probably be mostly on our own to do what we need to do individually to get ready for the tournament. For me, this will mean a lot of drilling, and matches every day. The intensity of the workouts will be high and the duration relatively short during this peaking phase of training.

On a lighter note, I was able to go fishing up on Pike's Peak on the last rest day. I caught four fish in two hours from a float tube on a prince nymph. Lots of fun!!! Might have to go back tomorrow.

Until Next Time,

Les
