Beavers win Classic,
Capture Five Titles

Oregon State University - December 29, 1996

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State won five individual titles and claimed the team championship Sunday as the ASICS Oregon Wrestling Classic concluded at Gill Coliseum. The Beavers pulled away from second-place Ohio State in the final round, turning a four-point edge into a 155-133.5 final margin.
Individual champions for the 25th-ranked Beavers were 118- pounder Jason Buce, 126-pounder Jake Whisenhunt, 134-pounder Oscar Wood, 150-pounder Isaac Wood and 167-pounder Clint Wilson.
Also placing from OSU were Mat Orndorff, third at heavyweight; Diego Hernandez, fourth at 126; Sanders Freed, fourth at 177; and Justin Vaughan, eighth at 142.
Buce, Oscar Wood and 177-pound champion Brandon Alderman of Wyoming tied in the voting for the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler Award. Buce, ranked eighth in the country at 118 pounds, and Wood, ranked fourth at 134, both had two pins in their four victories; Buce is now 13-0 this season and Wood is 16-0.
"I'm pleased with the victory," OSU coach Joe Wells said. "I think we had several other guys capable of being champions, and as a coach, you're always thinking of the possibility of them being there and totally dominating the thing.
"Our conditioning, as a team, was suspect. There were some guys that I could tell what they'd been doing over the holidays, and we need to get after that ... but I was pleased for the guys, they deserved to win it."
It's usually the heavier weights that finalize team outcomes, but on Sunday, it was OSU's lightweights that wrapped up a team victory. Oregon State led Ohio State just 135-131 going into the championship matches, and the first three weights pitted Beavers against Buckeyes.
"I was really up for that," said Buce, who did his part with a 5-0 win over Ohio State's Matt Fratta. "I just felt I had to wrestle, and that guy was a good wrestler. I knew he'd be tough, so I didn't want to put any more pressure on myself than I had to."
While Buce was getting his win, Whisenhunt was beating the Buckeyes' Robbie Archer 9-4 on an adjacent mat. Whisenhunt didn't see the team outcome as being any more dependent on the lighter weights than it usually is.
"We always feel that if we start off good, things will end up good," Whisenhunt said.
Oscar Wood got his second straight Classic title at 134 pounds with an 8-3 victory over the Buckeyes' Jeff Bucher, and that outcome ended the team race.
"We've also got a lot of guys at the upper weights we depend on," Wood said. "We're solid all the way through. It was a nice setup for us against Ohio State at the first three weights, but it was the whole team that got us to where we could do that."
Wood then got to watch his younger brother, Isaac, earn his first Classic championship with a 7-3 decision of Wyoming's Shilo Mathill.
"I get more nervous for him than I do for myself," Oscar said. Responded Isaac Wood, "He must not have much faith in me. I'm trying to show him he can have all the faith in the world ... I don't get nervous for him because he's tough. When he wrestles his best, nobody in the country can stay on the mat with him."
Wilson, a freshman, dropped down a weight to 167 pounds for the tournament and got the championship with an 8-7 win over Oregon's Kevin Keeney.
"It's nice to wrestle guys my size," Wilson said. "The guys at 177 are a little big for me ... being a freshman, anywhere they put me was fine. But when they decided to make a shift, I was happy about it."
