STICKS BY HIX CAP TWO WINS FOR 19TH-RANKED OSU WRESTLERS
Oregon State University - December 14, 1996

CORVALLIS, Ore. - In the first matches of his collegiate career, Oregon State heavyweight Arleigh Hix recorded two pins Saturday afternoon as the Beavers beat Portland State 39-3 and Southern Oregon State 37-6 in non-league wrestling at Gill Coliseum.

Staying unbeaten for OSU (3-1 overall) were 118-pounder Jason Buce and 134-pounder Oscar Wood, who both won twice to improve to 8-0 this season. Also picking up two victories for the Beavers were 150-pounder Isaac Wood and 167-pounder Jason Gutches.

OSU returns to Pacific-10 action at 2 p.m. Sunday against Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo at 2 p.m. at Gill Coliseum.

The doubleheader against PSU (0-2) and SOSC (2-3) gave OSU coach Joe Wells an opportunity to get some Beavers their first matches of the season and, in some cases, the first matches of their careers. Besides Hix, freshman 126-pounder Diego Hernandez also made his varsity debut; 158-pounder Andy Sapp and 177-pounder Jason Milham got their first action of the winter.

"It was nice to see them make the most of the opportunities they got," OSU coach Joe Wells said. "Arleigh is a pinner - I guess I never knew that."

Hix, a freshman from Eagle Point, had been getting used to the idea of redshirting until sophomore heavyweight Mat Orndorff suffered a minor knee injury last week. Called into action, it took Hix just 3:19 to pin Portland State's Adam Reese; Hix later flattened Southern Oregon State's Gary Roberts in 5:57.

"I don't know if I expected that," Hix said of his collegiate debut, "But I would have been disappointed with less. In my opinion, I don't win a match unless I pin the guy. A decision - I don't feel it's a victory. It is, but it isn't."

Hix went 30-6 last season at Eagle Point High and 26 of his wins were by pin.

Oscar and Isaac Wood each had one pin and Gutches had one pin and one match termination on the day.

"He looked great," Wells said. "He had some real nice stuff and stayed disciplined at his position. And Clint Wilson (a 12-9 winner at 177 against SOSC's Jamie Dixon) - I was pleased to see how he recovered and stayed disciplined when he needed to score."

In one of the day's most exciting matches, Wilson fought back from an early 6-1 deficit, recorded a takedown with 30 seconds left to tie Dixon at 9-9, then was credited with a three-point near fall as time expired for the winning points.

"The other kid was trying to get him into a throwing match, and he did at first," Wells said. "Then Clint settled down and went to work."
