STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's top-ranked wrestling team had no problem with 18th-ranked Oregon State as the Cowboys shut out the Beavers, 47-0, before 2,271 fans.
Oklahoma State started the dual out with a six-point forfeit at 118 pounds when Oregon States's eighth-ranked Jason Buce did not make the trip to Stillwater. Freshman Jeff Ragan (14-9) picked up the win for OSU, his 14th of the season. At 126 pounds, the Cowboy's top-ranked Eric Guerrero (21-1) defeated 12th-ranked Jake Whisenhunt with a five-point technical fall, 17-2.
"We wrestled very well maybe the best we have all season, said Oklahoma State head coach John Smith. "We were really intense and won all of the matches pretty handily. I was proud to see Shawn get him a pin in his first dual match of his career. Craig also looked good and the veterans wrestled well."
Shawn Smith (4-1), wrestling for Steven Schmidt at 134 pounds pinned Jake's brother Josh Whisenhunt in 1:20 for a 17-0 Cowboys' lead. Scott Reyna (19-2) followed that match with a pin of his own over Justin Vaughn at 142 pounds.
Oklahoma State's 11th ranked Jimmy Arias (15-7) kept the scoring drive alive with a 2-1 decision over Isaac Wood. A penalty point awarded to Arias with 1:40 left in the match was enough for the win. Third-ranked Hardell Moore (19-2) for Oklahoma State scored a takedown just one second into his match with Marcus Marjama and won easily, 22-5.
Mark Branch (22-0), the top-ranked wrestler in the country at 167 pounds, recorded the third fall of the evening for the Cowboys when he rolled Clint Wilson over just 2:38 into the match. It upped Branch's record to 22-0 on the season. Fourth-ranked Mark Smith (16-3) followed that with a 9-2 decision over Sanders Freed.
Craig Barngrover (5-4) put the team score at 44-0 with a 12-4 major decision over Jeramie York. Ben Lee (14-4) wrapped up the shutout for (the other) OSU with a 3-1 decision over Mat Orndorff at heavyweight.
It was Oklahoma State's sixth shutout of the season, the most since the 1982-83 squad recorded nine shutouts in that season. It was also OSU's 21st-consecutive win, equaling a 21-win streak in 1988-89. The Cowboys' longest winning streak in school history was 76 consecutive matches, from 1937-51.
"Oklahoma State Is a great team," said Oregon State head coach Joe Wells. "They look like national champions to me."
