This Week: Beavers Return Home for Three Duals in Two Days

Saturday, Dec. 14
Portland State at Oregon State - Noon
Southern Oregon at Oregon State - 2 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 15
Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo at Oregon State, 2 p.m.

Once the frenzy of this week's final exams is over, Oregon State will get busy on the mat with three dual meets in two days.

"The thing I'm concerned with is the irregular practices and getting out of the routine," OSU coach Joe Wells said. "We've got to prepare each individual for a good performance this weekend . . . you have to attempt to maintain as disciplined a routine as you can, though that's difficult during finals week.

"As a team, we expect to wrestle aggressively, to dominate and score a lot of points, to look for pins if we can get them, and to continue to improve. We're focusing on how to get the improvement we need to have. It will be a busy weekend."

The Beavers begin by hosting in-state foes Portland State and Southern Oregon on Saturday.

This won't be the first trip this season to Gill Coliseum for PSU (0-1 overall), which lost 33-8 to Stanford in a dual meet Nov. 30. The Beavers beat PSU 38-6 in Portland last season.

PSU sent five wrestlers to the Cliff Keen Invitational last weekend in Las Vegas and freshman 142-pounder Brad Galletes was the only Viking to come up with a win. The only Portland State wrestler with a winning record is junior heavyweight Tony Teuscher (4-2). Teuscher did not compete last weekend. The Vikings are also tough at 118 pounds with freshman Julian Lawrence (2-4) and 134 with senior Doug White (1-2).

Southern Oregon (1-1 overall) is the nation's third-ranked team in the NAIA. The Raiders placed seventh last weekend in the NAIA National Duals at Stateline, Nev., and then were 34th in the 45-team Cliff Keen Invitational at Las Vegas. SOSC was the third highest scoring NAIA team in the tournament, though.

One of the meet's best matches should be at 150 pounds, where OSU's Isaac Wood (6-1) takes on SOSC's Nick Cline (13-2). Cline won the Southern Oregon Open at 150 pounds in November; Wood finished sixth at 158. Cline, a senior who was the NAIA national runner-up last season, finished fifth at the Cliff Keen Invitational last weekend.

Oregon State defeated Southern Oregon 33-9 in Ashland last season.

OSU returns to Pacific-10 action against Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo on Sunday. The Mustangs (0-0 overall) placed 15th of 45 teams at the Vegas Invitational.

Cal Poly is led by two wrestlers who placed sixth at Las Vegas: senior 118-pounder Tyson Rondeau (6-4) and sophomore 158-pounder David Wells (7-5). One of Rondeau's Vegas wins was a 6-4 overtime decision against Illinois' Lindsay Durlacher, ranked third in the nation at 118. Durlacher later beat Rondeau in the fifth-place match.

That could make Sunday's featured match the first of the day, where Rondeau will meet OSU's Jason Buce. Buce (6-0) has a team-high four pins and won the Sheridan Tournament title last weekend.

OSU took a 36-6 win over Cal Poly-SLO at San Luis Obispo last season.
