Intensity, focus, emotion ... Oregon State took all of those to new levels last weekend in its best team performances of the season. Now the Beavers (5-5 overall, 3-1 Pacific-10) are out to make those qualities a little more consistent when they continue their homestand this weekend.
OSU, which has won five of its last eight duals, hosts Pacific-10 foes Stanford (2-6, 0-1) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and California-Davis (3-2, 0-1) on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Gill Coliseum.
Last week, OSU won three of five dual meets. The losses were to 19th-ranked Wisconsin and 10th-ranked Central Michigan, and both meets weren't decided until the final match.
"What I saw was good intensity," OSU head coach Joe Wells said. "We had people going out and setting the pace, putting a lot of pressure on the opponent and using the response they received from the pressure they exerted. When you set the pace, you typically are the recipient of some pretty good results rather than waiting for the other person to dictate the pace or the tenor of the match.
"The more we can keep ourselves dictating the pace, the better we like it."
The Beavers want more of the same this weekend - and to turn that aggression into points on a more regular basis.
"essentially, we're trying to have great intensity, great focus, and have a more consistent result," Wells said. "We need to adjust in our matches, come up with alternative attacks instead of going to the same attack all the time. We want to keep the pressure on and give ourselves the opportunity to score many more times."
Most of Oregon State's remaining schedule is against Pac-10 competition, heightening the importance of each match's result.
"We can help ourselves in regard to the Pac-10 rankings in preparation for a good seed at the Pac-10 Championships," Wells said. "The top four guys in the Pac-10, essentially, go to the national tournament, so it's important we start zeroing in on some of the top spots."
Several Beavers have started charges toward a high seeding with their recent performance.
Heavyweight Andy Bowlby won all four of his matches last weekend as he recorded his eighth and ninth pins of the season and beat a nationally-ranked opponent. The senior has won seven straight matches and is 17-4 this season; he moved up one spot this week to ninth in the Amateur Wrestling News national rankings and jumped two spots to 11th in the InterMat rankings.
At 174 pounds, senior Jake Huffman has won five straight and nine of his last 11. Freshman 184-pounder Dan Pitsch has won eight of his last 11 and had a six-match winning streak stopped Sunday against Central Michigan. Sophomore 165-pounder Matt Ellis has won 5 straight, including a victory over ninth-ranked Kevin Carr of Central Michigan. Freshman 149-pounder Tony Hook has won five of his last seven, including a pair of wins over nationally-ranked wrestlers.
Stanford brings a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers to Corvallis. Cardinal 157-pounder Matt Gentry is ranked 20th by AWN and 17th by AWN, while 133-pounder Brad Metzler is ranked 18th by IM. The Cardinal lost to Pennsylvania 38-6 last week, then competed in the Aggie Open at UCD and Gentry won the title at 157 pounds. Stanford wrestles at Oregon on Friday afternoon before coming to Corvallis.
Friday's meet could match Pac-10-ranked wrestlers at two weights. At 125 pounds, Stanford's Nathan Peterson is ranked fourth and OSU's Michael Delaney is ranked fifth; at 184 pounds, Stanford's Harold Penson is ranked fourth and OSU's Dan Pitsch is ranked fifth.
California-Davis has one nationally-ranked wrestler: 133-pounder Urijah Faber is ranked 14th by AWN. The Aggies hosted the Aggie Open last weekend; their last dual was a 36-3 loss at Iowa on Jan. 3. UCD wrestles at Portland State and at Oregon on Friday before visiting OSU.
Saturday's meet could match Pac-10-ranked wrestlers at four weights. At 165 pounds, possible OSU starter Jed Pennell is ranked fourth and UCD's Michael Font is ranked fifth; at 184 pounds, OSU's Dan Pitsch is ranked fifth and UCD's Ronnie Silva is ranked sixth; at 197 pounds, OSU's Jason Lovell is ranked second and UCD's Justin Bailey is ranked fifth; and at heavyweight, OSU's Andy Bowlby is ranked fourth and UCD's Jason Paul is ranked sixth.
