Beavers sign Kyle Larson to letter of intent

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State has signed two-time state champion Kyle Larson (Hermiston, Ore./Hermiston HS) to a wrestling letter of intent, Beaver head coach Joe Wells announced Wednesday. Larson, who won titles at 112 pounds as a freshman and 145 pounds as a junior, will try for a third Oregon Class 4A high school state title this winter in his senior season.

"Kyle is a tough, hard-nosed kid and he's another one from that Hermiston connection," said Wells. OSU's current roster includes four former Bulldogs, including Kyle's older brother, 157/165-pounder Jeremy Larson.

Kyle Larson was 42-1 with 28 pins last season, running his career record to 115-7 with 60 pins in high school competition. He's also a two-time Intermountain Conference champion.

"He's a powerful wrestler and a good competitor," Wells said. "We're excited that Kyle is coming here." Larson also won state titles in Freestyle and Greco-Roman as a sophomre, placed second in the state in both as a junior and placed third in the state in both as a freshman. In 2001, he was the national runner-up in Greco-Roman and was also on Oregon's Cultural Exchange team that went to Japan.

"It's just kind of a ritual," Larson said of choosing OSU. "My coaches (Curt and Cliff Berger) went there, my brother is there, there are a lot of Hermiston guys there. They're really building a good program, and having (former NCAA and world champion) Les Gutches there as a coach is big, too." Larson is considering studying Forestry or Fish and Wildlife.
