Quick trip to Oregon Wrestling Classic,
then Michigan at Gill

After nearly a month of venturing to the Midwest for meets, Oregon State (5-4 overall, 2-1 Pacific-10) once again gets to compete in its own state. The Beavers will cross the Cascades to Redmond on Friday for the Oregon Wrestling Classic Duals at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds, meeting No. 16 Illinois (1-1 overall, 0-0 Big Ten), Brown (3-1) and No. 11 NAIA Pacific (Ore.) (7-4); OSU then returns to Gill Coliseum on Saturday for a dual meet against No. 4 Michigan (4-0 overall, 0-0 Big Ten).

"It's a great weekend for us," OSU head coach Joe Wells said. "We meet a Big Ten team on Friday, then get to come home and meet another one on Saturday.

JANUARY 11, FRIDAY
Oregon State at Oregon Wrestling Classic Duals; Redmond, Ore.; all day (OSU vs. Brown, 9:30 a.m.; OSU vs. No. 16 Illinois, 11:45 a.m.; OSU vs. No. 11 NAIA Pacific [Ore.], 3 p.m.; finals, 8 p.m.)
JANUARY 12, SATURDAY
No. 4 Michigan at Oregon State; Gill Coliseum; 1 p.m.

"You look at our schedule, and it's pretty ambitious for our team. But our guys are coming away with an understanding of what works and what doesn't work against good competition. The level of conditioning, the level of intensity - it's all those intangibles that you've got to have some good idea of."

After facing Michigan, the Beavers will have wrestled three of the top four teams in this week's National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, having already squared off with No. 1 Minnesota and No. 2 Oklahoma State. That may not lead to a lot of early-season victories, but Wells likes how OSU has responded.

"We've worked through some injuries and a pretty tough schedule, and our guys have remained focused and positive," Wells said. "We definitely think if we wrestle well and keep the pressure on people, we're going to be a pretty good team by the time the conference and national mets roll around."

The Beavers have four wrestlers in this week's national individual rankings. Heavyweight Jason Cooley is ranked ninth by Amateur Wrestling News and eighth by InterMat; 174-pounder Nathan Coy is ranked 11th by AWN and 15th by IM; 133-pounder Nathan Navarro is ranked 19th by IM; and 141-pounder Casey Horn is ranked 19th by AWN after knocking off second-ranked Chad Erikson last week.

In this week's Pacific-10 rankings, there are six Beavers among the conference's top four wrestlers in their weight class: Coy is No. 1 at 174 pounds; Cooley and teammate Andy Bowlby share the No. 2 ranking at heavyweight; and all ranked No. 3 are Navarro, Horn and 197-pounder Jason Lovell.

Illinois has six wrestlers in the national rankings: 125-pounder Twan Pham is ranked 19th by IM; 133-pounder Mark Jayne is ranked 17th by IM; 149-pounder Ryan Berger is ranked 15th by AWN and 17th by IM; 157-pounder Griff Powell is ranked 19th by AWN and 15th by IM; 165-pounder Matt Lackey is ranked second by AWN and third by IM; and heavyweight John Lockhart is ranked third by both AWN and IM.

Brown has one wrestler in the national rankings: heavyweight Bronson Lingamfelter is ranked 15th by AWN and 19th by IM. Pacific (Ore.) has four wrestlers in the NAIA national rankings: 125-pounder Kahaa Rezantes is seventh; 157-pounder Troy Hall is fifth; 184-pounder Ian Courter is eighth; and heavyweight Jon Small is fourth.

Michigan has 10 wrestlers in the national rankings: 125-pounder A.J. Grant is ranked ninth by AWN and 12th by IM; 133-pounder Foley Dowd is ranked 10th by AWN and 10th by IM; 141-pounder Clark Forward is ranked 12th by IM; 149-pounder Mike Kulczycki is ranked sixth by AWN and eighth by IM; 157-pounder Ryan Bertin is ranked fifth by both AWN and IM; 165-pounder Charles Martelli is ranked 19th by AWN and 13th by IM; 174-pounder Otto Olson is ranked second by both AWN and IM; 184-pounder Andy Hrovat is ranked second by AWN and third by IM; 197-pounder Kyle Smith is ranked seventh by both AWN and IM; and heavyweight Matt Brink is ranked sixth by AWN and fifth by IM.

It's history
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: These will be the first-ever wrestling dual meets between Oregon State and Brown and between Oregon State and Illinois.
Oregon State has an all-time record of 19-0-0 against Pacific (Ore.) in a series dating back to 1960. The teams met earlier this season in the Oregon State Duals, with OSU taking a 32-6 win on Nov. 23.
Oregon State has an all-time record of 0-2 against Michigan in a series dating back to 1998. Michigan won both by 23-18 scores, in 1998 in Corvallis and in 1999 at the Virginia Duals.

Horn pulls upset in Beavers loss at No. 1 Minnesota<BR> LAST WEEK: Oregon State 141-pounder Casey Horn upset second-ranked Chad Erikson of Minnesota but the 25th-ranked Beavers fell to the top-ranked Golden Gophers 31-10 in a non-league dual meet Jan. 6.
Against Minnesota (6-0, 0-0 Big Ten), the Beavers got wins from Horn, 133-pounder Nathan Navarro and 165-pounder Jed Pennell. Horn, who had dropped out of the national rankings, made his case for returning to the list with a 6-5 win over Erikson. Horn improved to 14-6 this season with 6 pins and 4 wins over nationally-ranked wrestlers.
"There's no question he can compete," OSU head coach Joe Wells said of Horn. "He's one of the best competitors on the team; no matter who he's wrestling, he'll give it everything he's got. That's what I like about him - he's always getting after people. If he's going against a guy he's supposed to beat, he's trying to put him on his back and pin him."
Horn didn't get off to a great start, as Erikson scored a takedown just six seconds into their match. Horn escaped just over a minute later, then a long scramble ended with Horn scoring a takedown just before the end of the first period to go up 3-2.
After starting the second period in the down position, Horn again got into a scramble with Erikson and managed a reversal to push his lead to 5-2 going into the final period.
Erikson opted for the neutral position to start the final two minutes and took Horn down with 1:12 remaining, cutting the gap to 5-4. Horn was warned for stalling with just over a minute to go, then escaped with 41 seconds remaining to go in front 6-4. The final escape was crucial, because Erikson had accumulated enough riding time to be awarded a point at the end of the match, making it a 6-5 win for Horn rather than forcing overtime.
Navarro scored the Beavers' only team bonus points of the day, earning a 10-2 major decision over Eric Anderson at 133 pounds. Pennell's victory was a 7-5 decision over Nate Baker at 165.
Going against a Minnesota team whose roster includes a nationally-ranked wrestler at every weight - including 6 ranked in the top 3 in their weight class - the Beavers wrestled well enough to put themselves in scoring position numerous times. However, Wells felt OSU got a look at the details that separate a top-ranked team from a top-25 team.
"It was productive for us to go in and see exactly how hard they have to deliver their technique," Wells said. "They just have to be very determined and put a lot of power and pressure on a guy, and drive all the way through."
As an example, Wells looked at the 157-pound match in which Minnesota's third-ranked Luke Becker pinned OSU's Micah Houston in 6:20.
" A couple times Micah took Becker down, but Becker kept wrestling and flipped Micah over on his back," Wells said. "Micah just didn't hold on long enough, he took it off a little and Becker used Micah's strength against him from what would have been a great takedown.
"Hopefully, we take these lessons and learn from them, and use them next week against Illinois and Michigan and the other teams we wrestle at the Classic."

Going to the Wells
OREGON STATE HEAD COACH JOE WELLS: Joe Wells, now in his 10th season as Oregon State's head coach, has led the Beavers to a Pacific-10 title and 4 top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships.
The Beavers' 25-10 win over then-No. 11 Boise State last season was Wells' 100th dual meet win at OSU. Since taking over the Beaver program prior to the 1992-93 season, Wells is 108-65-1 for a winning percentage of .624.
The Beavers were Pacific-10 Conference champions under Wells in 1994 and he has twice been named the conference's Coach of the Year. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships 4 times in Wells' tenure, placing second in 1995, fourth in 1994, eighth in 1996 and tying for ninth in 1998.
Under Wells, OSU has had 2 national champions, 15 All-Americans and 16 conference champions.
Wells was named the ASICS Oregon Wrestling Classic's Man of the Year for 1998 for his contributions to wrestling in the state.
Wells, who has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, is a 1972 Iowa graduate. He was a 2-time placer at the Big Ten meet and the 1976 U.S. Wrestling Federation freestyle champ. He spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa and Michigan before coming to Oregon State.

Challenge you to a dual
OREGON STATE SECOND IN ALL-TIME DUAL MEET WINS: OSU rates as one of the best dual meet teams in collegiate wrestling history. The Beavers are second in all-time dual meet wins among Division I schools and fourth in all-time dual meet winning percentage going into the 2001-02 season. OSU currently has an all-time dual meet record of 842-257-24 and a .760 winning percentage.

Rough road
OREGON STATE'S DUAL MEET SCHEDULE: OSU faces one of the nation's toughest dual meet schedules. The Beavers meet 7 teams ranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll of Jan. 9, including 3 of the top 4: No. 1 Minnesota, No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Michigan, No. 10 Arizona State, No. 16 Illinois, No. 20 Nebraska and No. 24 Fresno State.

Gill's a thrill
OREGON STATE IN GILL COLISEUM: Oregon State has one of the finest homes in college wrestling, 10,400-seat Gill Coliseum. Now in their 46th season in Gill Coliseum, the Beavers have a home dual meet record of 351-63-6 in the arena for a winning percentage of .843. This season, OSU is 5-1 at home and is averaging 978 fans per home date.
In 2001, the Beavers attracted an average of 1,131 fans per home date. That included a crowd of 2,862 for Iowa's first-ever visit to OSU on Jan. 6; that was Oregon State's largest home crowd in over a decade.
OSU moved its home wrestling meets into Gill Coliseum in 1956-57, when Dale Thomas became head coach. Since then, the arena has hosted conference championship meets 13 times and it was the site of the NCAA Championships in 1961 and 1980. Gill Coliseum will be the site of the 2002 Pacific-10 Conference Championships.

I oughta belt you
BOWLBY EARNS USA WRESTLING BELT FOR 2001: Oregon State heavyweight Andy Bowlby was the winner of the USA Wrestling's 2001 Championship Belt Series for University-level wrestlers. Bowlby, an OSU junior from Newberg, Ore., won both the freestyle and Greco-Roman titles at the University National Championships and also earned a silver medal in freestyle at the Pan American Championships.
USA Wrestling's University National Championships cover the freestyle and Greco-Roman styles, while the NCAA Championships are for collegiate, or "folkstyle" competition.
USA Wrestling is the governing body for the sport in the United States. Based on a point system, it crowns Championship Belt Series winners in each of its age-group levels: Cadet, Junior, FILA Junior World, University and Senior levels. Athletes only receive points on the specific age level where they compete, and points cannot transfer from one age level to another age level.
Bowlby claimed the University level Championship Belt Series with 163 points, defeating runner-up Jamill Kelly of Stillwater, Okla. by 40 points. University athletes are 18-24 years old and their class has graduated from high school.
The Belt Series is based upon a point system, rewarding athletes for actual success in competition. Athletes who place in the major USA Wrestling events on the regional, national and international levels scored points in the series.

Welcome back
BEAVER WRESTLING HOMECOMING: Oregon State held its annual Beaver Wrestling Homecoming on Dec. 12, when a crowd of 1,356 saw the Beavers beat archrival Oregon 16-16 by criteria. Oregon State welcomed back 21 former wrestlers and legendary head coach Dale Thomas. The alums on hand accounted for 26 individual conference titles, 17 All-America finishes and 7 NCAA national titles.

A 1-1 win earns a 16-16 win
CRITERIA DECIDES SEASON'S FIRST CIVIL WAR: Oregon State won the season's first Civil War dual meet over Oregon on Dec. 12 as OSU heavyweight Andy Bowlby's 1-1 win over 12th-ranked Eric Webb left the final team score at 16-16. But, under a tiebreaker rule in effect for all NCAA dual meets this season, the Beavers got the team victory.
The rule had previously been in effect only for dual-meet tournaments, in which a winning team had to be decided to advance in the bracket. A set of criteria is used to break the tie, and OSU won on criteria g, which awards the victory to the team with the most near-fall points. OSU 174-pounder Nathan Coy scored the only near-fall of the meet with a 2-pointer in his 10-1 win over Shane Webster.
To end the dual, Bowlby held Webb down for the 30-second tiebreaker at heavyweight to earn what went in the books as a 1-1 win. Most of the crowd of 1,356 left the building thinking the dual had ended in a tie, but officials were thumbing through the rule books to find the list of criteria in order to declare a winner.
In order, the criteria are most victories (that night, 5 each), most 6-point wins (none), most 5-point technical falls (none), most 4-point technical falls (none), most major decisions (1 each), most decisions (4 each) and greater number of total near-fall points earned (Oregon State 2, Oregon 0).

Blankety-blank
OREGON STATE SHUTS OUT CENTRAL WASHINGTON: Oregon State recorded its first shutout of the season when it beat Central Washington 44-0 in the Oregon State Duals on Nov. 23 at Gill Coliseum. It was the Beavers' first shutout since a 45-0 win at Cal State-Fullerton late in the 2001 season.

Fab four
OREGON STATE'S QUADRUPLE-HEADER: When Oregon State wrestled 4 meets at the Oregon State Duals on Nov. 23, it was the first time the Beavers had wrestled 4 duals in a day since Jan. 11, 1997 at the Virginia Duals. This year, OSU beat Portland State 36-3, Central Washington 44-0, Pacific (Ore.) 32-6 and Simon Fraser 40-9; in 1997, OSU beat Cornell 30-10, Indiana 22-13, Cornell 20-13 and lost to Arizona State 23-13.

That's pretty rank
