We'll meeting nationally-ranked teams at Nebraska

Coming off an encouraging performance at the Las Vegas Classic, Oregon State (1-0 overall, 1-0 Pacific-10) returns to dual meet competition this weekend. The Nebraska Duals will bring together three of the top programs from three of the nation's top wrestling conferences - the 14th-ranked Beavers of the Pacific-10, the seventh-ranked Cornhuskers (3-0, 0-0 Big 12) and 15th-ranked Ohio State (0-1, 0-0 Big Ten).
"It's going to be great," OSU head coach Joe Wells said. "Nebraska and Ohio State are awesome opponents; they are two excellent teams."

Nebraska-Omaha, a Division II power who had been scheduled for the event, will not attend the competition. All three teams that will be on hand took part in last weekend's 52-team Las Vegas Classic, with Nebraska placing second, Oregon State fifth and Ohio State 15th.
"Other than (champion) Illinois and (third-place) Lehigh, each of the top 10 teams had about four athletes place at Las Vegas," said Wells, noting that Oregon State had four placers, Nebraska four and Ohio State two. "Nebraska has three pretty dominant wrestlers, and Ohio State didn't bring a few guys to the tournament. These should be two very good duals."
Coming off OSU's performance in Las Vegas, the Nebraska Duals promise to be a good learning experience for the Beavers.
"We'll be wrestling back-to-back meets against good competition - two good, solid teams," Wells said. "Plus this will make back-to-back trips for us, and we're coming off final exams - it will be a good test for us."
The Beavers have six nationally-ranked wrestlers this week: 125-pounder Nathan Navarro (No. 15 Amateur Wrestling News, No. 17 InterMat), 141-pounder Shane Cunanan (No. 18 AWN, No. 20 IM), 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen (No. 5 AWN, No. 7 IM), 174-pounder Nathan Coy (No. 10 AWN, No. 15 IM), 184-pounder Isaac Weber (No. 17 AWN, No. 16 IM) and heavyweight Jason Cooley (No. 5 AWN, No. 2 IM).
OSU's weekend could feature matchups between nationally-ranked wrestlers at 125 pounds, 141 pounds, 157 pounds, 174 pounds and heavyweight. Other Beavers who could take on nationally-ranked opponents are 133-pounder Ben Richards, 149-pounder Paul Barron, 165-pounder Jed Pennell and 197-pounder Jason Lovell.
Nebraska has five nationally-ranked wrestlers: 125-pounder Jason Powell (No. 10 AWN, No. 9 IM), 133-pounder Todd Beckerman (No. 2 AWN, No. 1 IM), 157-pounder Bryan Snyder (No. 2 AWN, No. 2 IM), 174-pounder Ati Conner (No. 9 AWN, No. 9 IM) and 197-pounder Brad Vering (No. 1 AWN, No. 1 IM).
Ohio State has six wrestlers in the national rankings: 133-pounder Jeff Ratliff (No. 19 IM), 141-pounder Robert Sessley (No. 17 AWN, No. 17 IM), 149-pounder Keaton Anderson (No. 20 AWN, No. 19 IM), 165-pounder Joel Walker (No. 18 AWN, No. 9 IM), 197-pounder Nick Preston (No. 3 AWN, No. 3 IM) and heavyweight Tommy Rowlands (No. 4 AWN, No. 3 IM).

It's history
ALL-TIME VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: Oregon State has an all-time record of 2-2-0 against Nebraska in a series dating back to 1973, and the Beavers are on a 2-meet losing streak against the Cornhuskers. The last meeting was in 1999 at the Oregon Wrestling Classic in Portland, with Nebraska taking a 19-12 victory. OSU's last win was in 1984 in Lincoln, an 18-16 triumph.
Oregon State has an all-time record of 3-4-0 against Ohio State in a series dating back to 1978 and the Beavers are on a 1-meet winning streak against the Buckeyes. The last meeting was in 1998 at the Virginia Duals, where OSU won 22-16. Ohio State's last win was in 1995 in Columbus by a 24-11 score.
OSU's strong effort good for fifth place at Las Vegas
LAST WEEK: Oregon State earned fifth place in the 52-team field and the Beavers had four wrestlers place at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Classic on Dec. 1-2. OSU heavyweight Jason Cooley placed second; taking third were 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen and 174-pounder Nathan Coy; and finishing eighth was 125-pounder Nathan Navarro.
“It was a good weekend for us,” Oregon State head coach Joe Wells said. “We made some progress. We wrestled aggressively, our conditioning was good and we went after it, but we made a lot of mistakes and that’s what we need to focus our attention on - the little things that are the difference between being a pretty good team and being a championship team.” Illinois won the tournament with 156 points, followed by Nebraska with 113.5, Lehigh with 105.5, Arizona State with 89.5 and OSU with 88.5. The Beavers racked up a load of team bonus points in the tournament, scoring 3 pins, 6 technical falls and 9 major decisions.
The 11th-ranked Cooley reached the finals with a 4-2 win over eighth-ranked Tommy Rowlands of Ohio State in the semifinals, but was unable to wrestle the title match and was a medical forfeit.
The 10th-ranked Jorgensen dropped a tough semifinal match, losing to third-ranked Kirk White of Boise State 2-1 in a tiebreaker. He bounced back to beat fifth-ranked Shaun Shapert of Edinboro 2-1 in a tiebreaker for third place.
Coy, ranked 15th, was pinned by second-ranked Josh Koscheck of Edinboro in 2:30 in the semifinals. He took third place with a 10-8 win over Mauricio Wright of San Francisco State.
Navarro, ranked eighth, took a 4-0 victory over Ryan O’Connor of South Dakota State in the fourth round of wrestlebacks. He then lost 9-3 to Shawn Williams of Oregon in the wrestleback semifinals and 6-0 to eighth-ranked Ryan Escobar of Illinois in the seventh-place final.
Going to the Wells
OREGON STATE HEAD COACH Joe Wells is in his ninth season as Oregon State's head coach. Since Wells took over prior to the 1992-93 season, OSU has a 92-53-1 career dual meet record at OSU.
The Beavers were Pacific-10 Conference champions under Wells in 1994 and he has twice been named the conference's Coach of the Year. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships four times in Wells' tenure, tying for ninth place in 1998 and placing eighth in 1996, second in 1995 and fourth in 1994.
Under Wells, OSU has had two national champions, 15 All-Americans and 16 conference champions.
Wells was named the ASICS Oregon Wrestling Classic's Man of the Year for 1998 for his contributions to wrestling in the state. Wells, who has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, is a 1972 Iowa graduate. He was a two-time placer at the Big Ten meet and the 1976 U.S. Wrestling Federation freestyle champ. He spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa and Michigan before coming to Oregon State.

OREGON STATE SECOND IN ALL-TIME DUAL MEET WINS: OSU rates as one of the best dual meet teams in collegiate wrestling history. The Beavers were second in all-time dual meet wins among Division I schools and fourth in all-time dual meet winning percentage going into the 2000-01 season. OSU currently has an all-time dual meet record of 826-246-24 and a .765 winning percentage.

OREGON STATE IN GILL COLISEUM: Oregon State has one of the finest homes in college wrestling, 10,400-seat Gill Coliseum. Entering their 45th season in Gill Coliseum, the Beavers have a home dual meet record of 340-60-6 for a winning percentage of .845. This season, OSU is 1-0 at home.
OSU moved its home wrestling meets into Gill Coliseum in 1956-57, when Dale Thomas became head coach. Since then, the arena has hosted conference championship meets 13 times and it was the site of the NCAA Championships in 1961 and 1980.
For the past several years, Oregon State has averaged over 900 fans per dual meet at Gill Coliseum. That includes crowds of over 2,200 for each of the last 2 home Civil War duals against Oregon.

OREGON STATE WRESTLING TICKETS: All Oregon State wrestling tickets are sold on a general admission basis. They are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens (age 62 and over) and students (high school and under). OSU students are admitted free with an all-sports pass or for $1 with their OSU student identification card.
Local Bi-Mart stores have coupons good for 2 admissions for the price of 1 adult admission for all OSU home wrestling meets.
Wrestling is also part of the OSU 7-Sport Pass, which is good for general admission seating at all home contests in wrestling, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, women's basketball and baseball. The 7-Sport Pass is $130 for a family pass that admits 2 adults and 2 children; $80 for an adult pass; and $60 for a senior citizen or student pass.

BEAVERS ON TELEVISION: OSU will have a pair of dual meets televised by Fox Sports Net on a tape-delayed basis this winter. The Beavers' dual meet at Oregon on Dec. 13 and the home dual against Iowa on Jan. 6 will be shown on dates to be announced.
