Goal is to keep building momentum

Oregon State (9-3 overall, 5-1 Pacific-10) has kept building momentum over the two several weeks, and the opponents keep getting bigger.

Last week, the Beavers knocked off 11th-ranked Boise State for their fourth straight dual meet victory. Next up? Ninth-ranked Arizona State (5-3, 1-0) comes to Gill Coliseum, where OSU is 6-1 this season and the Beavers are averaging nearly 1,000 fans per date.

"It's wonderful," Oregon State head coach Joe Wells said of the timing of ASU's visit. "It's really good for us."

FRIDAY, JANUARY 26 No. 9 Arizona State at No. 14 Oregon State, 7:30 p.m.

Echoed Beaver senior 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen: "It definitely makes it exciting, wrestling tough teams back-to-back. You come off a win over one tough team and get to wrestle another tough team. We'll try to do the same thing we were able to do against Boise State - go out and dominate."

The Beavers won seven of the 10 weights against the Broncos, scoring team bonus points twice and beating nationally-ranked wrestlers three times. During the four-meet win streak, OSU has won 31 of 40 matches and scored team bonus points 16 times; bonus points are earned for major decisions, technical falls and pins.

"It's like we took the Iowa lesson to heart," Wells said, recalling a Jan. 6 loss to the third-ranked Hawkeyes. "With them, there was no hesitation from the first whistle to the end of the match - they were in your face and after you, and we saw that works. Now we just need to keep making it work.

"The first couple guys have set the tempo - we've seen guys show leadership and try to push the other guy, not sit on a lead. When we do that, it can put another team on its heels and prop up our team. Then the next guy will try to outdo the other one, and you've got some healthy competition within the team."

ASU figures to be at least as stern a test as Boise State. The Sun Devils have five nationally-ranked wrestlers, including third-ranked Eric Larkin at 141 pounds and fourth-ranked Steve Blackford at 165 pounds.

"They've got some great athletes and some highly-ranked wrestlers," Wells said. "They've got some others who aren't as highly-ranked, but who are good athletes. We need to be aggressive against them, but cautious. We need to make them work for everything."

Pending the release of updated rankings at mid-week, there are three matches that should pit nationally-ranked Beavers and Sun Devils. At 133 pounds, it's OSU's Ben Richards (No. 20 InterMat) against ASU's David Douglas (No. 13 Amateur Wrestling News, No. 15 IM); at 157 pounds, it's OSU's Jorgensen (No. 7 AWN, No. 8 IM) against ASU's Rocky Smart (No. 16 AWN, No. 10 IM); and at heavyweight, it's OSU's Jason Cooley (No. 6 AWN, No. 8 IM) against ASU's Kellan Fluckiger (No. 10 AWN, No. 15 IM).

Also, at 141 pounds, ASU's Larkin (No. 3 AWN, No. 3 IM) goes against OSU's Shane Cunanan, who has been in the national rankings this season; and at 184 pounds, ASU's R.D. Pursell (No. 10 AWN, No. 19 IM) could meet OSU's Isaac Weber, who dropped from the national rankings after not wrestling the past two weeks.

"There are key matchups, just like in any dual," Wells said. "But every match will be a key from the standpoint of not giving up any bonus points, and going out and scoring bonus points where we're favored."

One of the Beavers who has been the best at that recently is Jorgensen. In his current four-match win streak, Jorgensen has recorded two technical falls and a pin; his fourth victory was a decision over third-ranked Kirk White of Boise State that could move him up in the rankings this week.

"It definitely makes it easier when you're wrestling well and dominating people, and doing the things you wanted to do before the match starts," said Jorgensen, who is 22-5 with two pins this season. "I've been working on moving my feet and doing a better job of wrestling on my feet. I can hold just about anybody down; if I can do a better job when I'm on my feet, it opens a lot of things up."

Other Beavers on a roll recently include 125-pounder Nathan Navarro, who has won 10 of his last 12 matches to improve to 16-8 with one pin; 141-pounder Cunanan, who has won nine of his last 12 and is now 15-6 with one pin; 165-pounder Jed Pennell, who has won six of his last eight and is 13-6 with two pins; 174-pounder Nathan Coy, who has won 18 of his last 20 and is 25-5 with one pin; and heavyweight Cooley, who has won 14 of his last 17 and is 17-4 with two pins.

It's history

ALL-TIME VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT: Oregon State has an all-time record of 10-12-0 against Arizona State in a series dating back to 1970, and the Beavers are on a 1-meet losing streak against the Sun Devils. Last season, OSU lost 23-16 in Tempe. Oregon State's latest win in the series was 23-19 in Corvallis in 1999.

Wells, Jorgensen mark 100th wins as OSU sweeps

LAST WEEK: Oregon State picked up a pair of wins, beating Cal Poly 28-12 and Boise State 25-10 in the OSU Duals at Gill Coliseum on Jan. 20.

When the 14th-ranked Beavers knocked off 11th-ranked Boise State to cap the day, it handed OSU head coach Joe Wells his 100th dual-meet win with the Beavers. OSU got a big win from Eric Jorgensen, as the nation’s seventh-ranked 157-pounder knocked off third-ranked Kirk White 6-1 to key the team victory; that was the 100th match win of the Beaver senior's career.

“I guess I don’t think so much about the 100th win or about the ranking,” Wells said of beating Boise State. “But I do recognize the way we wrestled - we nullified their offense, we made them work hard, and we took it to them in the third period. That’s what we have to do to win the Pacific-10 and be in the hunt at nationals.

“One hundred wins just means you’ve been coaching a long time. But it’s always nice to pass those milestones, and and it’s especially pleasing to beat a Boise State team that was ranked above us.”

Wells is now 100-56-1 in his ninth year at OSU. Jorgensen is 100-41 in his career after topping White.

“That was pretty cool, with winning the match and then finding out afterward that it was my 100th,” Jorgensen said. “That was pretty exciting.”

White, who won the NCAA title at 165 pounds last season, had beaten Jorgensen 2-1 in overtime at the Las Vegas Classic last month. This time, Jorgensen gained the edge in the second period and pulled away late in the match.

“That’s a very good win for Eric because of the way he did it," Wells said. "He scored to both sides of the body, he took him down twice. I thought Eric was in superior condition. He rode him and got riding time. He used a lot of different things, and that’s what he’s going to have to do to beat White at the conference meet and at nationals . . . it was a crunch match in a crunch situation. To beat a national champion is a fine feat.”

It was a big day for OSU seniors Jorgensen and 133-pounder Ben Richards.

Jorgensen had recorded a pin in his match against Cal Poly. Richards, who sat out last week’s Oregon Wrestling Classic Duals, also had a pin against the Mustangs and started OSU’s rout of Boise State with an 8-0 major decision over Charlie Griggs, who had entered the match with a 14-6 record.

“That was the most significant match of the day,” Wells said. “Ben went out there and set the tone. He had a leadership position there where he could have given up back points but he slipped the guy and put him on his back. He got a 5-0 lead and he didn’t sit on it, he majored him. That’s a dramatic beginning.”

Jorgensen also felt Richards' win sparked the Beavers.

“That set them back,” Jorgensen said. “We came out and wrestled hard. I think they expected to come out and beat us because they’d just beaten Oregon (18-12 on Friday night) and Oregon had beaten us. But Ben whooping that guy helped our confidence, then Shane (Cunanan at 141 pounds) goes out there to win . . . one match builds off another one. We just build the momentum and go.”

After Jorgensen’s win put the Beavers up 10-3 in the team score, OSU 165-pounder Jed Pennell provided another spark in the next match when he pinned Casey Eager in a brisk 1:35 to make it 16-3 at the meet’s halfway mark. Sixth-ranked Nathan Coy extended the OSU lead to 19-3 with a 10-5 win over Pat Owens at 174 pounds.

Going to the Wells

OREGON STATE HEAD COACH JOE WELLS: Joe Wells has hit the century mark is in his ninth season as Oregon State's head coach. The Beavers' 25-10 win over then-No. 11 Boise State on Jan. 20 was Wells' 100th dual meet win at OSU; since taking over the Beaver program prior to the 1992-93 season, Wells is 100-56-1.

The Beavers were Pacific-10 Conference champions under Wells in 1994 and he has twice been named the conference's Coach of the Year. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships four times in Wells' tenure, placing second in 1995, fourth in 1994, eighth in 1996 and tying for ninth in 1998.

Under Wells, OSU has had 2 national champions, 15 All-Americans and 16 conference champions.

Wells was named the ASICS Oregon Wrestling Classic's Man of the Year for 1998 for his contributions to wrestling in the state.

Wells, who has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, is a 1972 Iowa graduate. He was a 2-time placer at the Big Ten meet and the 1976 U.S. Wrestling Federation freestyle champ. He spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa and Michigan before coming to Oregon State.

OREGON STATE SECOND IN ALL-TIME DUAL MEET WINS: OSU rates as one of the best dual meet teams in collegiate wrestling history. The Beavers were second in all-time dual meet wins among Division I schools and fourth in all-time dual meet winning percentage going into the 2000-01 season. OSU currently has an all-time dual meet record of 834-249-24 and a .764 winning percentage.

The house of pin

OREGON STATE IN GILL COLISEUM: Oregon State has one of the finest homes in college wrestling, 10,400-seat Gill Coliseum. Now in their 45th season in Gill Coliseum, the Beavers have a home dual meet record of 345-61-6 in the arena for a winning percentage of .845. This season, OSU is 6-1 at home with the only loss being to 6-time defending national champion Iowa.

So far in 2001, the Beavers have attracted an average of 990 fans per home date. That includes a crowd of 2,862 for Iowa's first-ever visit to OSU on Jan. 6; that was Oregon State's largest home crowd in over a decade.

OSU moved its home wrestling meets into Gill Coliseum in 1956-57, when Dale Thomas became head coach. Since then, the arena has hosted conference championship meets 13 times and it was the site of the NCAA Championships in 1961 and 1980.

The Beaver 100

MILESTONES VS. BOISE STATE: When Oregon State beat Boise State 25-10 on Jan. 20 at Gill Coliseum, it marked milestones for OSU head coach Joe Wells and senior 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen. Both earned the 100th win of their Oregon State careers when the Beavers knocked off the then-11th-ranked Broncos.

For Wells, it was his 100th dual meet victory since taking over the OSU program prior to the 1992-93 season. Jorgensen earned the 100th match win of his Beaver career by upsetting then-third-ranked Kirk White 5-1; White was the NCAA champion at 165 pounds in 2000.

Boise State was the highest-ranked team beaten by the Beavers since OSU topped 10th-ranked Arizona State in 1999.

Record romp

NOTES ON CAL-DAVIS SHUTOUT: When Oregon State beat Cal-Davis 43-(-2) on Dec. 16 in Gill Coliseum, it was time to dig into the record books. OSU won all 10 matches for the first time since a 44-0 home win over Lehigh early in the 1995-96 season. Cal-Davis finished the meet with negative points after being penalized 2 team points for unsportsmanlike conduct; it was the first time in OSU’s 1,102-dual history dating back to 1909 that the Beavers ever finished a meet with their opponent in negative points. OSU’s victory over Cal-Davis was also the Beavers’ first shutout of a Pac-10 opponent since a 51-0 home win over Oregon in 1984. It was the most points OSU had scored in a meet since the 44-0 shutout of Lehigh in 1996 and it was the Beavers’ widest margin of victory since topping Pacific 46-0 in 1993.

OREGON STATE WRESTLING TICKETS: All Oregon State wrestling tickets are sold on a general admission basis. They are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens (age 62 and over) and students (high school and under). OSU students are admitted free with their OSU student identification card.

Local Bi-Mart stores have coupons good for 2 admissions for the price of 1 adult admission for all OSU home wrestling meets.

Wrestling is also part of the OSU 7-Sport Pass, which is good for general admission seating at all home contests in wrestling, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, women's basketball and baseball. The 7-Sport Pass is $130 for a family pass that admits 2 adults and 2 children; $80 for an adult pass; and $60 for a senior citizen or student pass.

BEAVERS ON TELEVISION: OSU have had a pair of dual meets televised by Fox Sports Net on a tape-delayed basis this winter. The Beavers' dual meet at Oregon on Dec. 13 and the home dual against Iowa on Jan. 6 were televised.
