Cooking for One
Bored with the usual Top Ramen and Mac n Cheese? If you're like the rest of us, join us at the Women's Center where we will be having Ann Marchant (Nutritionist at Dixon Rec) demonstrate and discuss how to SHOP, COOK, and EAT a balanced meal on a budget!
The event is from 4 - 5:30pm. There will be FREE food and prizes available!
Women in Religion: Islam

Faiza Al-Saaidi, an instructor in the Women's Studies Department, will be talking about Islam and women. The focus is on women's role in the faith, women's place historically, and where they are now.
Marcus D. Russell: Women in Film
Friday, October 26
From 4-5PM
Marcus will be speaking for approximately 45 minutes, focusing on the traditional role of women in film, why Generation X cinema and strong female characters are inextricably linked. He will then turn the discussion to "reclaiming the image" and "reclaiming the media" by introducing subversive characters as the norm. There will be an invitation for discussion after.

Dr. James Blumenthal, a professor in the Philosophy Department, will be speaking about women in the Buddhist faith. He will cover the history of women in the faith, their current status, how the faith views women and their roles, and any movements for change.

Latifah Lyles who was elected Membership Vice President of the National Organization for Women in July of 2005 will be here at the Women's Center to speak about racial justice and feminism.
Seasonal Affective Disorder

Mariette Brouwers, from Counseling and Psychological Services, will talk about seasonal affective disorder. The typical symptoms of SAD, that can affect more than 10 million people a year, include depression, lack of energy, increased need for sleep, a craving for sweets and weight gain. Symptoms begin in the fall, peak in the winter and usually resolve in the spring. Brouwers will talk about why it happens and what treatments are available.

Propaganda: Feminism, Activism, and Popular Culture

Andi Zeisler is the co-founder and editorial/creative director of bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture, which began in 1996 as an all-volunteer 'zine with a circulation of 300 and is now an internationally distributed quarterly magazine. She will be presenting "Propaganda: Feminism, Activism, and Popular Culture" on the history of Bitch, the ways in which pop culture has changed-both for better and for worse-and why popular culture is a crucial locus of feminism. It will also include some examples of ways that feminists are using the medium of pop culture for their activism. co-sponsored by Portland Eastside NOW and Oregon NOW (www.oregonnow.org)

Dr. Bernice R. Sandler is a Senior Scholar at the Women’s Research and Education Institute in Washington, DC, where she consults with institutions and others about achieving equity for women and is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Drexel University College of Medicine. She formerly wrote a quarterly newsletter, About Women on Campus. She has given over 2500 presentations, has written more than 100 articles and is well-known for her expertise in women’s educational equity in general as well as in sexual harassment, the chilly classroom climate, and her knowledge of policies, programs and strategies concerning women on campus. She also serves as an expert witness in discrimination and sexual harassment cases.

On January 27, 2007, the Benton County Breast and Cervical Cancer Coalition will host the third LUNAFEST™ Corvallis at the LaSells Stewart Center. LUNAFEST, now in its sixth year as the only national touring festival of films “by, for, and about women,” is produced by LUNA®, the whole nutrition bar for women. This year’s films range from quirky animation to touching documentaries and have a total running time of 96 minutes.

Women’s Center
The Women's Center will be having Willa Schneberg and Anita Feng coming in to the Women's Center for poetry reading. Willa Schneberg is the winner of over eleven poetry awards, including the 2002 Oregon Book Award for Poetry. Her writing has been featured in may publications including Bridges, The Oregonian, Salmagundi, and The American Poetry Review. Anita Feng is the author of two award-winning publications. Her most recent work ins Sadie and Mendel, which received the Backwaters Press Award in 2005. Feng's work has also received the Washington State Gap Award, the Pablo Neruda Prize (for poetry) and the Andres Berger Award for Non-fiction.

Body Positive Week
February 12th-16th, 2007
The purpose of Body Positive Week is to inform the Oregon State University student body about various eating disorders and body image issues that affect mental and physical health. This project will also provide a space for open dialogue about these topics and offer information about resources on campus where students may find continued support for these personal issues.
The events for the week include:
Tuesday, February 13th, 11am –2pm in the OSU Memorial Union near Bites
There will be a table in the MU where people can make their own positive message Valentine’s. Information about body image issues will also be available. (This event will possibly be repeated on Wednesday 14th, 11am-2pm).
Thursday, February 15th, 4pm-6pm, OSU Women’s Center
Viewing of the HBO documentary film “Thin.” The film will be followed by discussion to be let by Women’s Studies faculty, Dr. Patti Watkins.
Friday, February 16th, Time and Place: TBA
M.A.R.S. (Male Advocates for Responsible Sexuality) will lead a presentation on concepts of masculinity.

Stained Glass Ceiling: The Role of Women in the Church

The event, sponsored by Women Studies, features a viewing of “Battle for the Minds,” a film about the fundamentalist takeover of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and the subsequent firing of the seminary’s only woman theology professor. Also part of the event are responses from former Southern Baptist women and a panel discussion by women in ministry from a variety of other Christian denominations.
