14th - Can I Be a Feminist and . . . Shave, Eat Meat, Date Men, or Be Religious? - 2:00 p.m.

Amy Richards and Jennifer Baumgardner, authors of Manifesta: Young Women, Feminism, and the Future, will visit OSU's campus and speak about this compelling question. Their notable book been described as: "encouraging young women to embrace both "girlie culture" and political activism, Manifesta is a call to arms and a defense of the "I'm not a feminist, but" mentality. Feminism can include Helen Gurley Brown and Susan Faludi, the Spice Girls and Ani DiFranco. Young women don't have to discard their M.A.C. cosmetics and hip-hop records in order to call themselves feminists, the authors contend, but feminism can empower their lives by raising their consciousness, listening to their lives, and giving them the means to make a contribution." 28th - Sex Signals - 7:00-8:30 p.m., Milam Auditorium

Blending a unique combination of improvisational comedy, education, and audience participation, this performance provides a provocative look at the issues of dating, sex, and ultimately, sexual assault on college campuses. The show explores how mixed messages, gender role stereotypes, and unrealistic fantasies contribute to misunderstandings between the sexes. At their worst, these factors enable some to view date rape as simple seduction, and for victims of rape to blame themselves for their vulnerability. Although the message is a serious one, the show uses humor throughout to engage audiences in candid discussions about interpersonal relationships. Seasoned actors and educators, the performers strike a balance between laughing about the differences between men and women, and clearly communicating some serious messages about how we treat one another. Sponsored by Athletics, the Dean of Students Office, the President's Commission on the Status of Women, Greek Life, University Counseling and Psychological Services/Sexual Assault Support Services, Student Health Services, the Women's Center, Public Safety and Oregon State Police, and Residence Life.
