In 1992, a dozen Chinese seamstresses were laid off from their jobs making sleeves, collars and piecework for Lucky Sewing, a subcontractor for Jessica McClintock, a company that manufactures Gunne Sax dresses. When Jessica McClintock pulled its contract from Lucky Sewing, the subcontractor declared bankruptcy and told the women, who had been working 10 to 14 hours a day, six or seven days a week, that it couldn’t pay them back wages.

Health coverage grows bit by bit in Legislature

SALEM — Legislators crowded behind Gov. Ted Kulongoski when he signed a bill Wednesday requiring insurers to help thousands of Oregon women pay for birth control pills. It was a perfect photo opportunity for a proposal that has captured a lot of attention in Salem this year.

A study on emergency contraception availability in Corvallis

Southern Baptist leader: educated women are ‘threatening the family’

Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary president Paige Patterson says families need to be concerned that in America, 60% of college students are female. He predicts that in a few years, men will be increasingly underrepresented among “the intelligentsia” and will gradually cede leadership in many areas to women.
