Women's Leadership Initiative
Our initial class of 18 outstanding women was selected in November, 2006 and has been meeting weekly since January 10th. They have shared successes and challenges with each other, most have already attended regional leadership workshops or will soon be attending national conferences, and they are engaged in several community service and social change projects. Additionally, they are learning a great deal about women and leadership from multiple perspectives.
Using the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, our goals are as follows: First, we wish to promote increased self knowledge, an understanding of the interests, talents, and values in each member of the cohort. Second, we seek to increase leadership competence to mobilize each individual and to inspire the group to work collaboratively on social change projects. Last, we hope to create measurable change in each individual and lasting change on our campus and in our community. These will be assessed at the end of each spring term.
Guest speakers in 2007 have included (or will include) Bernice Sandler, Angela Davis, Naomi Wolf, Tim McMahon, Celeste Walls, Bridget Burns, Jackie Balzer and Winona LaDuke.
The wonderful network of women student leaders (all of whom are active in many leadership opportunities on campus) have formed the basis to pursue ways of gathering women for in-depth conversation, to empower women leaders to address critical issues on campus, and to strengthen the informal and formal educational opportunities for emerging women leaders at OSU.
