Williams, Tara

Tara's ENG 208 class is a great class for students to take who are not necessarily huge fans of the subject of literature. She makes the class enjoyable with interesting readings, and class discussions in which much of the class becomes involved as some point. She frequently gives reading quizzes at the beginning of class to see whether you read the text or not. If you did the assigned reading, the quizzes are no problem. For a midterm and final she assigns a short essay, and has an in-class portion consisting of 2 close readings and 15-20 short answers. The nice thing is that she tells you the short answer questions before the test, letting you know what to study. Overall, I'd highly recommend Tara's ENG 208 class, which is offered during winter term.
Tara Williams has also taught an ENG 204 class which was Survey of English Literature. I took this class Fall 2004 and her teaching style was almost identical to that mentioned above. She is a great teacher--what she teaches you in her classes like close reading/text analysis techniques sticks with you and often has come in handy for other classes. When I took her ENG 208 class, it was nice to find that the format of her class and teaching style stayed consistent from the time I took my first class with her to when I took this class. Another great thing about her is that she provides excellent feedback on papers and tests; she also is readily available outside of the classroom to answer questions you may have about anything in the class. I would highly recommend taking any of her classes.
