Wakeboarding Terms

Terms

  • Wakeboard- This is what you you ride behind the boat on using the boats wake as a jump or ramp. There are a many different types of wakeboards to go with many different styles of riding.
  • Length- this is usually decided by the height and weight of the rider, but ultimately whatever you feel most comfortable on is what will work best.
  • Rocker- The boards rocker is the way in which the bottom of the wakeboard is designed. There are two types of rocker, continious and three stage. Continious rocker has a smoother pop off the wake and sends the rider out more towards the flats, it also is more forgiving than the three-stage rocker. Three-stage Rocker has a harder, more snappy pop off the wake. Three-stage rocker is designed to send the rider in a more upward direction than the continious. The three-stage rocker is not as forgiving as the continious.
  • Fins- There are two types of fins, molded and removeavble. They are pretty self explanatory. You can remove the removeable fins and you cant remove the molded fins. The biggest part about fins is their location. Most conventional boards have the fins located in the center of the board. The more agressive boards and most pro model boards are putting the fins on the outter edges of the board to give the rider more control and give the rider a more agressive line towards the wake. Again the best way to choose a fin step up is to use what you feel the most comfortable with.
  • Bindings- Bindings are what connect you to the board, in my opinion the bindings are the most important choice you have to make, because from personal experience if you are not comfortable in your bindings, you will not be comfortable wakeboarding. Their are tons of different choices when it comes to bindings. Starting with conventional straps, to velcro straps, lace up bindings, rachet bindings, and the new boa systems bindings that use a metal cable on a rachet system. A snug fit and good foot bed are two of the most important asspects of a good binding.
  • Rope- the rope is pretty simple. Wider is better and whatever is easiest for you to hold on to will work just fine.
  • Boat- The key to a good boat is having lots of room for all you friends and it needs to throw a big wake. There are new boats made now just for wakeboarding which are obviously the best choice, but if you have a regular boat, there is many things you can do to it to make it a better wakeboarding boat. First adding a tower or a pilon, what these do is raise the rope higher for the rider so it makes it easier to complete tricks. Add a fat sac, a fat sac is a bag that holds hundreds of pounds of water to add weight to the boat so it will have a bigger wake and allow the rider to get more air when he or she jumps off the wake. A wedge is an add on that goes underneth the boat and when it is used it pulls the back of the boat deeper into the water so that it will create a bigger wake like the fat sac. Board racks, board racks keep all the boards out of the boat so that their can be more people in the boat, which means more weight and more fun for everyone.
  • Wakeskate- a wakeskate is a wakeboard that doesnt have bindings. Instead you just use skate board shoes and the goal is to basically be skateboarding on water. I am not very good at it so I dont have very much information on wakeskating.

Loactions to Wakeboard near Corvallis

  • Foster Lake- This lake is about 40 miles from the OSU campus NE on highway 20. On a clear sunny day this lake is absolutley gorgeous! Foster lake is a little on the small side, so if the wind is kicking up or there are a lot of boats out there, the water can get a little choppy.
  • Lake Billy Chinook- Lake BC is in beautiful sunny central Oregon. LBC is about 2.5 hours away from Corvallis, and I would say that it would be worth the drive. With 75 miles of shore line, this location ensures you that you have a lot of water to cover! Also, if you want to make this into a get away trip, they also have houseboats to rent out if interested.
  • Willamette River- The Willamette River is a great place to wakeboard. Since it is a river and not a lake, it is a lot less choppy, which is a good advantage. There are many locations to drop in your boat and get started. One location that I enjoy riding is 10th street. To get to this location you need to go north on I-5 until you get to the breakoff at 205, take 205 for about 10 miles until you get to exit 6. This is the 10th street exit. Take a right off the exit and signs from there will take you to the docks. This location is good for both experienced and beginners. There are ramps set up as well as rails. This is a good location to try out!

  • Backside: A spin where the rider rotates with the back of their body towards the boat first
  • Off-Axis: When a rider does a spin but goes off the vertical axis so the board usually gets up to shoulder level or above
  • Shifty: Board is shifted 90 degrees in one direction and then shifted back in the opposite direction
  • To Blind: The rider lands with the rope wrapped around their back instead of passing the handle
