Help An Animal In Need

Heartland Humane Society is always looking for new volunteers to help with the animals at our
local shelter. These animals often need the love and reassurance of humans after being displaced
from their original home. You can spend time cuddling with a kitty or taking a dog for a walk, both
of these activities help the animals to adjust to life in a shelter. Many other forms of helping
exist so check with Heartland about these opportunities. The best part of this for many college students, who may be missing their favorite pet back
home, is that you get to enjoy the company of an animal without the dorm or apartment management
being upset. If you have questions about the volunteer program please contact Dani Bolda at
Heartland Humane Society for more information.

Big Brother/Big Sister

Becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister is a great way to get involved in the Corvallis community.
When you become a Big Brother or Big Sister to a child, you help teach the child the importance of giving and being a friend. Also, studies show,
that a child that participates in this program -- and programs like this -- or less likely to get involved with drugs and/or alcohol and
they are more likely do well in school, to graduate from high school, continue on with higher education, participate in the community,
abstain from sex at early ages, and be productive members of society. If you want more information, visit the OSU Chapter at 149 MU East or give them
a ring at 541-737-6369.

levels, that are in need of volunteers. Volunteer opportunities at schools could include being
a teacher's aide, making copies, reading to kids, tutoring, helping with projects, assisting
during field trips, helping earn funding for playgrounds or other things, and maybe even just
being a friend to someone. The best way to get started is to contact one of the schools and
ask what you could do. You could also start with getting Ten Tips on Volunteering

Help Abroad with ISV

Helping people and communities abroad can be very rewarding. ISV, which stands for International Student Volunteers, is always looking for more college aged kids to help out in a fun filled way. The program masses volunteer work groups in many countries, Australia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, New Zealand, and Thailand. They even have a program in the USA for students coming from Europe. The standard four week program has students in groups of 6-8 working hands-on with either people in need or reviving environments and doing conservation work. You can choose which area you would prefer to volunteer in depending on the country that you select. After your two week volunteer program is up, you can receive up to 5 school credits that transfer as a work-study program. Following your two week volunteer program, you have the option to go on a two week adventure tour in the country which you selected. You travel with people your age and do crazy things from diving the great barrier reef, to white water rafting, and if your super adventurous you can even go skydiving. ISV has been doing these highly organized volunteer work programs for over 23 years now and counting. They plan to open further work programs and options in the next couple years. This is an excellent way to travel the world with peers your age, and also a great opportunity to go on some of the most extreme adventures of a lifetime. ISV is a non-profit organization that has done great things in the past year. To help the cause visit www.isvonline.com to check out how you can get involved.

IMPACT

You never really know how your help can really contribute to someone. IMPACT (Individual Movement and Physical Activity for Children Today) is a volunteer opportunity for students here at Oregon State. It is a required club for some Exercise and Sports Science major but anyone can be a volunteer. IMPACT give you the chance to really test your leadership, strength (physical, and mental), and patience. You are given the opportunity to work with mentally challenged children from ages 12-19, once a week and aid them with their mobility. You are required to be active by doing strenuous activities and participate in under water activities. Being a volunteer you need to be a strong willed person, and have a lot of motivation, because the work load can be exhausting. IMPACT bestows the chance for the children to become stronger individuals, and even though it may not seem like it, you are helping that child to develop movements that will benefit him/her in the pursuit of having more of a successful life on their own. You also can find a friend in your child and you can not only help them through IMPACT but also after IMPACT as a life long friendship. IMPACT can help you as a person because you can learn a lot about yourself in doing these activities because it proposes a challenge, and it gives you a different type of life satisfaction. It is conveniently located on campus at the Women's Building, and will also has activities at the Dixon Recreational Center.
