Travel Organizations
From OSU Wiki
People are always looking for cheap ways to travel. There are many travel organizations that often students are not aware of. These organizations allow students to travel to fun and exciting places on a budget and provide opportunities for work, study and entertainment all around the world.
Here's an organization that is based on homes and businesses providing free room and board in exchange for usually 4-6 hours of work. It is called Willing Workers on Organic Farms. Though there are many jobs on farms, there is a wide range of many other types of opportunities around the world as well. It is a great opportunity to experience different cultures and ways of life while keeping an easy living. Once you've become a member, the organization is free and provides numerous updated opportunities both online and through the mail.
Through this organization I found a job at an Irish Pub on an island in New Zealand called Great Barrier Island. The Pub was called The Currach. I worked here for 3 months doing dishes for four hours a day at the pub in exchange for a free room at their lodge and free food at their restaurant. Because of the people I worked with, the job was actually very fun. I met all sorts of interesting people and had some of the most incredible experiences of my life. The island was beautiful and the people I met, I still keep in touch with today. I would strongly recommend checking out this program and seeing what amazing place you could find
This organization is a profit-based organization that offers short-term jobs, student programs and basic travel opportunities based on your needs. It is called LeapNow. I've found it to be a very helpful in finding exactly what your looking for with their thousands of global connections to different firms. [LeapNow]
I used LeapNow to find an organization in Northern Queensland called Mungalli Falls Student Village and Wilderness Retreat. It was located right in the heart of Milla Milla, a little town with vast rolling hills and lush rainforests. The climate was very hot and humid and there were all different types of birds and wildlife. Here I lived in a little house on a hill overlooking the restaurant and beautiful surrounding landscape.
I worked as a waiter in the restaurant they had and when student camps came in I was a camp counselour, supervising the outdoor activities for the kids. I also had some small side jobs as well, giving waterfall and glow-worm tours, taking care if a wild platypus, and walking two very stubborn Alpaccas daily. In exchange for my work I received a free place to stay as well as free breakfast, lunch and dinner at the restaurant. The food was great and the people there were amazingly friendly. I learned so much doing this job would very strongly recommend using this service as a vehicle for finding your own adventure.
Volunteering Abroad
Volunteering abroad is a great way to gain experience in other cultures and build your resume at the same time. With Volunteering Abroad there are many different exciting types of things you can do. There are options like teaching English, building homes, you can even enroll with the Peace Corps. Some companies even offer academic credits and the Peace Corps actually pays you in the form of stipends and can save you money by deferring student loans, among other things.
Here are some links to good student travel websites with more information of Volunteering Abroad:

Here's a site that has connections to all different types of transportation with discount packages for students. I've heard this to be very helpful and the students I talked to who went through this organization told me they saved quite a bit of money on getting to where they needed to go.
