History of Theta Chi

Theta Chi started as an organization known as the AMicus Club. In 1916 the Amicus Club recieved a charter from the national head quarters of Theta Chi and became the sigma chapter of Theta Chi. Sigma Chapter Chapter is the Theta Chi located at Oregon State University. The Sigma Chapter was the second chapter ever organized west of the Mississppi River and the first in Oregon.

Our Original house first presided on 23rd and Monroe where Campus Tan and Holly Cow used to be. In 1923, Theta Chi started building a new house (where Theta Chi is now) on 26th and Harrison. The house was done on May 28, 1926. The architech commissioned to build the house did a great job and was commissioned to build the houses of Phi Gamma Delta and Alpha Gamma Delta. In 1942, the Beta Kappa Fraternity joined Theta Chi Fraternity. Since then, Theta Chi has never left. Currently Theta Chi is celebrating its 150th year anniversy and the sigma chapter is celbrating its 90th year anniversy.

Theta Chi is also proud to say we have never lost our Charter and have initiated over 1500 members since our existance at Oregon State University. Once a term, Theta Chi also organizes and publishes an original newspaper called the Tattler which is sent to parents and alumni. Theta Chi members also particapate annually ina performance known as sing. Sing is a song and dance put on by fraternities and sororities for mom's weekend. In the last two years, 2005 and 2006, Theta Chi is proud to have won the award for best costume.

Since the founding of Theta Chi, 214 chapters have been installed nation wide where 127 are still active.

Theta Chi’s Active Stance Against Hazing

Theta Chi Fraternity has an active stance against hazing and believes hazing puts the health and well being of individual members at risk. From the Theta Chi handbook, “The Fraternity prohibits absolutely all physical hazing, paddling, uncalled-for humiliation, and public display in connection with pledging and pre-initiatory activities, and subscribes to the National Interfraternity Conference resolutions and the Fraternity Executives Association’s Statement of Position on Hazing and Pre-Initiatory Activities which condemn all forms of hazing in connection with New Member education and pre- initiatory activities. The active chapters shall carry out the Fraternity’s policy and conform strictly to this policy, not only to escape the danger of bringing discredit to the Fraternity and injuring the entire fraternity cause, but also to build higher respect for the chpters and the Fraternity in the minds of New Members and to instill a finer type of loyalty therby. The Fraternity prohibits all forms of public initiation, and pre-initiatory and initiation activities shall not be permitted to interfere in any way with the scholastic obligations or class attendance of those involved.”

Big Brothers

Big Brothers are a tradition in most Theta Chi Chapters and is currently active at OSU. A Big Brother is an initiated member who assists and advises a New Member as he completes the New Member Education process. It is considered an honor to be a Big Brother and most chapters have specific requirements for being allowed to serve as Big Brother.
