Sustainability at Oregon State University

About This Page

Sustainability is a growing movement at OSU with both grassroots and institutional support. This area of the OSU Wiki is designed to be a place to share and exchange ideas, discuss projects and spread information about what's happening with sustainability at OSU. It complements the official OSU sustainability website.

But unlike the sustainability website, anyone (with ONID credentials) can directly edit this wiki so that a dynamic and community-driven resource is maintained. It is not intended that the content of the sustainability website be repeated here. Check the sustainability website for information on:

  • Campus construction projects
  • Campus buildings
  • Programs like research centers, departments and other standing organizations
  • General information about sustainability

This wiki might be useful to:

  • Share information about projects and who's doing them
  • Share future project ideas
  • Collect and share information about clubs and other organizations
  • Post event notices and volunteer opportunities

Questions about what to put on this page can be directed to Brandon Trelstad, OSU Sustainability Coordinator.

Student Projects

Post information here about projects that primarily involve or are lead by students. These can be existing projects or project ideas. Include contact information if you want help or ideas from others. If you prefer to keep your email address hidden, or protect it from spammers, use the OSU Web E-Mail Form. Most faculty, staff and students have access to this tool, which sends messages through a web form to the email address you registered with the university (often the ONID address).

Classroom Temperatures

Institutional Projects

Projects in this section are lead by university staff and/or faculty, and many of them also involve students. All community members, particularly students, should look for volunteer opportunities in this section. Staff and faculty are invited to post projects here. If you prefer to keep your email address hidden, or protect it from spammers, use the OSU Web E-Mail Form. Most faculty, staff and students have access to this tool, which sends messages through a web form to the email address you registered with the university (often the ONID address).

Sustainability Audits

  • Contact: Greg Smith
  • Timeline: Ongoing
  • Project Description: Any individual or department that is Education and General (E&G) funded is eligible to receive a Sustainability Audit. An audit typically begins with the auditor meeting with an interested group. Things such as office habits and policy, transportation, materials purchasing and disposal, heating and cooling issues, and recycling are discussed. Then the auditor goes into every space within the selected area, noting computers, lighting, other electrical equipment and climate conditions. Within 2-3 weeks, a report is send back to an office contact with recommendations on how the office occupants can decrease energy, water and materials use. Also, problems with ambient conditions (too hot, too cold, breezy etc.) are directed to the proper staff.
  • Audit Details: An audit of an office or a group of offices takes around 1 hour; a floor 2-3 hours; an entire building will take up to 8 hours. These audits are free and the recommendations are implemented at the pace and discretion of the office occupants. While a single office is eligible for an audit, it is desireable to have larger groups, a floor or even a building audited at the same time for added comprehensiveness. See a sample audit report.
  • Audit Request: Please contact Greg Smithto schedule an audit.
