Overall Culture for the OSU Wiki
The OSU Wiki owes much of its culture to Wikipedia:
- Software Engine. The OSU Wiki uses a MediaWiki engine -- the same software that drives Wikipedia
- Copyright Policy. Just like Wikipedia, the OSU Wiki has adopted the GNU Free Documentation License. This grants free access to content in the wiki.
- Editing Rules. If you are new to editing a wiki, then you should read Wikipedia's Simplified Ruleset. It contains condensed wisdom about how to work collaboratively in a healthy manner.
- Follow copyright law. Copyrighted material should not be posted on the OSU Wiki without express permission from the copyright holder. Posting copyrighted material could lead to legal problems.
- Be respectful. Avoid inappropriate content that slanders or puts down people or organizations. OSU has a diverse student body and faculty, and we do not all see things from the same perspective. When differences of opinion emerge, use Discussion pages or email messages to arrive at a consensus approach
- Keep it clean. Text or images that display or suggest explicit content is prohibited.
- Do not advertise. Commercial advertising belongs elsewhere -- do not post it in the OSU Wiki. Exceptions to this general rule include activities that are closely related to OSU, such as exchanging textbooks between students or promoting OSU-related events.
- This is a public Wiki. Feel free to make changes, reorganize material, and add content. You can edit any page -- even this one.
- Your contributions can be edited by others. Do not be afraid to make mistakes -- if you add good content, other people can clean up editing bloopers or spelling errors. We are all working on this site together.
- Wiki Content. The OSU Wiki is continually revised by volunteers who can edit any page at any time. Since the content can be changed by anyone without prior peer review, pages may contain wild ideas or all kinds of inaccuracies. If you notice something that is obviously wrong, please remove or fix it.
