Interior of Gill Coliseum

Gill Coliseum is home of Oregon State Beaver Basketball. Gill Coliseum was constructed in the late 1949. It was named after Amory "Slat" Gill. He had coached the Oregon State men's basketball team from 1929 to 1964 and worked as an athletic director. Gill holds a place in OSU basketball history by being the all-time winnings basketball coach at OSU with 599 wins in only 36 seasons. Inside Gill Coliseum you will find that the area has a capacity of 10,400-seat. The Oregon State Beavers basketball court is named after basketball coach hall of famer, Ralph Miller. Miller has coached Oregon State University from 1970-1989, compiling a 657-382 overall record in 38 seasons.

Being built in the 1950 Gill Coliseum was in serious need of rebuilding and many steps have been taken to improve the exterior as well as the interior in the past two years. The current Oregon State University coach Jay John was hired in 2002 and since has taken it upon himself to create a better, more up to date surroundings for the Men's basketball team. Better facilities equal better chances to recruit which is directly connected with better teams and winning. Some of the work done includes the complete rebuilding of the locker room, that is now one of the best in the Pac-10. New lockers, new logos and meeting room as well as new technology are just some of the improvements made to its interior. The main court itself has been redone and repainted. New colors were added for a visually improved Ralph Miller court. These are just a few in the long line of improvements that the old gym needs and many are more to come with an energetic head coach like Jay John.

OSU Basketball Today

Even though we have a variety of talent, the OSU basketball team is not a top contender for the PAC 10. With a young team this year hopes are high, but they have to stay healthy to become a legit contender for the next years. Alot of improvement has been made since the arrival of head coach Jay John and the program is trying to rebuild itself not only on the basketball side of the matter. With better facilities and highly recruited players it is only a matter of time before an Osu team explodes on to the scene. This year will be a long process of learning for many young players on the team as the Beavers will fight to make another post-season appearance. However in 2007/2008 we can look forward to maybe the most exciting team in the past ten years. With a year under their belt this years freshman and sophmores will have gained valuable experience. The whole Beaver nation will certainly have high hopes and expectations on the upcoming generation.

OSU Men's Basketball Awards for 2005-06

Ralph Miller Award - Represents the Most Valuable Player

  • Senior point guard Lamar Hurd and Sophomore forward Sasa Cuic will share the award as co-Most Valuable Players

While Cuic received the award for being the most statistically productive OSU player, Hurd received his award for the immense contributions he makes to the team. Never was Lamar's importance so visible than when he suffered a season ending injury only a couple of games into Pac-10play. The team never really bounced back after that loss and ended the season with a negative record.

Slats Gill Award - Represents the player with the most exemplifies the characteristics of Slats Gill

  • Junior forward Michael Johnson

As son of former OSU standout Steve Johnson, Michael is the most intense and competitive player on the team. He brings energy and commitment to every practice, every day. A walk-on in his fifth year at OSU Michael is a lead by example type guy who influences many of the teams younger players.

Jim Anderson Award - Represents the most improved player

  • Sophomore forward Marcel Jones

Marcel Jones made the biggest leap in improving himself from his freshamn to his sophmore year. After a dissapointing freshman campaign the highly recruited Jones showed undisputable talent and a high skill level last year. He will be expected to improve even more as a starter on the forward position this year.

Paul Valenti Award - Represents a player who shows the greatest desire and determination

  • Junior center Kyle Jeffer

Also entering the program are a 6-11 power forward Roeland Schaftenaar and a late signee, a 6-2 point guard Vojin Svilar. The two continue the list of international players on this years team. atrend that will certainly continue in the years to come.

This incoming generation is one of the most expected ones in the last 10 years here at Oregon State. Some of these players will be called upon to contribute already this year and make the outlook on the OSU basketball future very bright.

Seth Tarver is expected to compete for the starting position by his sophmore and with his mix of athletic ability and a high basketball IQ he has all the tools neccesary to become special player in OSU history.

Lathen Wallace is a local prospect who will surely contribute even starting next year. he posseses a very good jump shot and has the ability to stretch out defenses with his long range. He will have a very good career here at OSU and will improve from year to year.

Roeland Schaftenaar is the intertnational man of mystery for OSU. The sky is the limit for this young man who at the age of 18 has an unbelievable combination of talent and skill. Great shooting ability combined with the 6-11 frame make him a "hard to guard" type player. With his continuing physical and athletic improvement we can expect a lot in the years to come.

Men's 2006-07 Basketball Team

Last year, the men's basketball team suffered a disappointing season, ending with a record of 13-18. When last season ended, so did the careers of a few seniors. Those players include; Nick DeWitz, Jason Fontenet, Lamar Hurd, and Chris Stephens. There is certainly hope for success this season, however. Returning are standouts Sasa Cuic, Kyle Jeffers, and Marcel Jones. This season head coach Jay John looks to mixed some of these experienced players with some youth. There are six freshmen on this years roster who have yet to be tested. These six freshmen include brothers Josh, who red shirted last year after suffering a broken foot, and Seth Tarver. It is Josh Tarver who will have the biggest expectations of all the players coming in to play this year. He will be expected to contribute right away playing the most important position at the point guard. How well he manages to adapt in the shortest amount of time will be crucial for the success of this years Oregon State Men's basketball team. With such a large amount of young players on the team, the squad will be fortunate to have a large number of home Pac-10 games to begin their conference schedule. This may help to ease them into the college game, but the Pac-10 schedule is never easy. Due to the fact that they do have some experienced players, however, this should be a season to look forward to for all of Beaver Nation.
