Beavers Complete Sweep of Stanford With Blowout

Beavers win sixth straight against Pilots

Rare Snow Out for Beavers

No. 15 Beavers head to So Cal

OSU Baseball Blog

Beavers clinch at least a share of the title. After an empressive sweep of Washington State this past weekend in Pullman the Beavs clinched at least a tie for the Pac-10 championship, and the only team with in reach of the Beavers in the UCLA Bruins who will be coming to Corvallis this weekend. One win over the Bruins this weekend will give the Beavers the out-right Pac-10 Championship and an automatic birth into the NCAA tournament. Come out this weekend and support your beavers as the attempt a repeat as Pac-10 Champions.

OSU Beaver Baseball needs you! Next weekends games against UCLA are not only the final home games of the regular season but could very well determine weather or not the beavs will take the pac-10 championship as it is the last series of the season. We need all of you OSU studets and supporters to come out to the games and support the beavers as they attempt to make school history. For ticket information call 1-800-Go-Beavs or 541-737-4455 or go to the ticket office at Gill Coliseum, i look forwrd to seeing your there.

Ready for battle The Oregon State, Washington State baseball series has always been a rivalry, some what like past civil wars they havent always had playoff implications, but this weekend when the 6th ranker beaver head to Polman to face the Cougars there will be more riding on the games for both teams than in the entire 96 year rivalry, in the 400 games played between the team these three may well be the most important. The Cougats are 33-18 and 9-9 in the Pac-10, good for fifth, with a good showing in there final two pac-10 series' the coug's could be in a position to do some damage in the post season. The beavers may have more on the line than a playoff birth, they have that (pac-10 championship)ring they want so bad. The beavs are 35-13 and 12-6 in Pac-10 good for the top spot. A series win this weekend would the beavers in great shape to be able to post another pac-10 champions sign in the outfield, and make another possible run at Omaha.

We battled hard but came up on the short end of the stick. The Beavers came into the weekend series with Arizona State ranked fourth in the country and with command of the Pac-10. Much of the team was looking to put ASU away and out of contention for the Pac-10 championship by sunday, however the Beavers were in a rare positon, after losing both the friday and saturday games in the late innings the Beavers were just one game up on the No. 16 Sundevils in the Pac. The Beavers batteled for nine hard innings coming back from an early four run deficit to win the game in the ninth inning and keeping a somewhat comfortable two game lead on the Pac. The Beavers are hungry for rival Washington State and know that a sweep could mean the second straight pac-10 championship in as many years.

We will respond The Beavers came down from the high of a seven game win streak and a three game sweep of the California Golden Bears on Tuesday when the Portland Pilots upset the 6th ranked beavers at home 13-20. Despite this gigantic upset the loss might be just what the beavers need to give them a spark heading into the stretch run of the Pacific 10 Conference league season and what will hopefully be a long post season for OSU. The team came out and had a solid practice on Wednesday preparing for four games this weekend, two against Cal Poly and two against New Mexico (who the Beavers split with earlier this year winning 16-1 and losing 13-2), The Beavers spirits are high and the team cant wait to get back on the field and put Tuesdays game behind them. The phrase written on the board in the Beavers locker room says it all, "we will respond."

Students wanted Despite students fighting for the right to their tickets to OSU home game prior to the season people can’t help but notice the lack of student support at the games. Sure there are the few die hard student fans that come to the games but what about the other 700 tickets that the ticket office saves for the students? I think every college baseball player will agree when i say that there is nothing like playing a game in front of your peer yelling and screaming and cheering and heckling the other team, don’t get me wrong i love the 40 and over crowd that usually dominates the fan population a the home games but players want you, the students, to come and support the team, enjoy the great atmosphere, the sun, and the game. Please, come out and support your team.

2006 OSU Baseball Team Wins the National Championship

It took eight games, and six victories in front of massive crowds in Omaha, but the Beavers won College Baseball's National Championship. The team was led by solid pitching performances by Kevin Gunderson and Jonah Nickerson. While these two are almost expected to dominate their opponents on a regular basis, the Beavers got outstanding performances from less heralded pitchers as well. Both Daniel Turpen and Mike Stutes pitched shutout games, going deep into the game before allowing the bullpen to finish the job. The Beavers, as a whole, had to step their game up as they were defeated by Miami in their first game in the College World Series. This was a huge blow due to the double elimination setup in Omaha. They bounced back quickly however and defeated Georgia a couple of days later. With this victory they were given another shot at Miami and defeated the Hurricanesimpressively. Their next opponent was Rice, who had been ranked as the number one team in the nation in some national polls. OSU had to beat the Owls in two consecutive games in order to advance to the CWS Championship and that is exactly what they did. Not only did they beat Rice, but they shut out an excellent team for two consecutive games. The Beavs then advanced to the championship round to face the University of North Carolina and three tremendous Tar Heels pitchers. OSU seemed a little nervous in the first game of the best of three series and dropped the first game by a score of 3-4. With their backs against the wall once again, the Beavers came storming back and took an 11-7 victory to force a third and final game. During the last game, with the game tied at 2 late and OSU at bat, a routine ground ball by Ryan Gipson was fielded and thrown wide of first base for an error, allowing Bill Rowe to score the eventual winning run. OSU then finished the game and took a 3-2 victory as well as the national championship and all of Beaver Nation rejoiced.

OSU Baseball General Information

The Oregon State baseball team had one of the most successful years in the history of the program in 2005. The team made it back to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska for the first time since 1952. The team concluded the season with a 46-12 record overall and winning the Pac-10 conference for the first time the the uinifcation of the Northern and Southern divisions, which occured in 1997. It was the first time that the Beavers had tasted postseason play since they were the champions of the Norhtern division of the Pac-10 conference back in the 1986 season. OSU is coached by Pat Casey, who is in his 12th season as the leader of the OSU baseball program. He came over to the Beavers after being the head coach at George Fox in Newberg for 7 years. He is a native of Newberg, Oregon. Casey took over the program from long time OSU coach Jack Riley in 1995. Riley, who the stadium concourse is named after, won over 400 games at OSU. OSU was picked in the preseason poll of coaches to repeat as winners of the conference during the 2006 season. Here is what the poll looked like: School (First Place Votes) Points

1. Oregon State (7) 62

2. USC (1) 51

3. Stanford (1) 46

3. Arizona State 46

5. Arizona 36

5. California 36

7. Washington 22

8. UCLA 17

9. Washington State 8

It was the first time since the unification that the Beavers have been picked to finish in the top 5 in the conference. Even during last year, when the team went to Omaha, they were a preseason bottom half of the conference pick. This is partly due to the historic nature of some of the teams in the conference. The USC Trojans lead all of college baseball with an unbelievable 12 National titles, 11 of which were won by legendary coach Ron Dedeaux. Arizona State, Arizona, and Stanford all also have tremendous baseball history. This makes the run of the Beavers the last few years all the more remarkable. Before last years run to the College World Series, the momentum had been building. In previous years the team was getting ever closer to making the postseason, however, for one reason or another they were just unable to get the call to the regionals. 1994 was probably the biggest example of this. The Beavers won the Northern Pac-10 title, but at that time that did not gaurantee you a spot in the NCAA tournament. The selection committee instead decided to select the Washington Huskies to the tournament, even though the Oregon State finished ahead of them in the standings. In subsequent years the team was very close to making the regionals but could never cross the threshold at the end of the season. In 2004 the team lost 2 out of 3 in the last series of the season and then on the NCAA selection show, the announcers said that if they had won one more game they robably would have been in. This was the case in many years between 1994 and 2005, ever so close to making the regionals, just never getting in. Then finally, arguably, the most storied season in OSU baseball history occured and the Beavers were able to not only push down the door to the regionals but also win those and move onto the the Super Regionals where they played the aforementioned storied USC Trojans and the Beavers were able to make it to the College World Series.
