NSE

The National Student Exchange is designed for undergraduate students within the United States and Canada to experience new and exciting states, regions, and cultures without having to travel abroad. Typically, students’ eyes are opened to our world, and most return with attitudes of understanding and acceptance. Students will gain maturity, reasoning, decision-making, and a sense of accomplishment during their exchange. You can study up to one calendar year at any of 180 other colleges and universities from coast to coast and across North America.

National Student Exchange has a 97 percent success rate for placement and enters students in every field of study. NSE promises to be a life-changing experience you will never forget.

Requirements

To be eligible for exchange, you must be a full time student here at Oregon State University. Your cumulative GPA must be above 2.5 and OSU must categorize you in “good standing” academically. As well, you can’t have any outstanding financial obligations to OSU.

If you are interested in applying for the NSE program, note that applications are due durring the winter term prior to the year of your exchange, and there is a non-refundable fee. Timeline

  • Attend the informational meeting held and pick up a booklet about the program.
  • Once you decide on the National Student Exchange Program, you should check deadlines and make sure you can complete everything on time. There is a registration fee of $135 for turning it in on time. It becomes $150 after that and it also becomes a lot harder to be accepted in some of the schools.
  • Look through the booklet as well as the website, www.nse.org for more information about each school including term/semester information, cost of attendance, housing and transferable credits.
  • Fill out application and turn it in before February 15. Decide whether you will be living on-campus or off and apply for on-campus housing if you choose to.
  • Right about now, it would be a good idea to ask about other students who will also be studying abroad either at your school or at others. It's nice to talk to people who are goign through the same thing and they can help you look for things and make arrangements.
  • Once you are accepted into your host campus the NSE coordinator should be contacting you about further fees and offering there assistance. Use them! They are extremely knowledgeable and know everything about their school. Direct all of your questions to them or other on-campus faculty.
  • Look through the catalog for classes that you are interested in. Make an appointment with your advisor to talk about transferable classes and your academis goals while abroad. Make sure you learn the requirements of the host school and whether your grades will transfer.
  • While you are buying your plane tickets, through a student discount agency if you want to save money, you might also want to do a little homework and research the culture, customs, weather, similarities and differences about the state you will be visiting.
  • Learn about yourself. you are the one person who knows yo the best. Consider home sickness and if it is an issue for you, then prepare for it. For many people this type of experience will be harder than expected. Taking yourself out of your usual surroundings can be difficult. Becoming acquainted with a new culture and being in a place where you may not know anyone is tough. Plan for this. Take items with you that will ease your feelings of home sickenss such as pictures, your favorite thing from your room, or even your blanquet if you need. It's all up to you, but make sure that once you are away that you will be okay.<\li>
  • Research fun events. Since you already know where you will be going and during when, do some looking around for events that will occur either there or nearby. Go out and experience the town, the state, the atmosphere. Your experince will be much more fullfiling this way.<\li>
