National Society Of Collegiate Scholars
General Information
The NSCS is a national organization with members from colleges and universities all around the United States. To become a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, a student must be in their first or second year at a university and be in the top 20th percentile of their class while maintaining at least a 3.4 G.P.A. New members must also pay a one-time fee of $75 to become a lifetime member.
Benefits from being a member include opportunities for networking, scholarships, leadership activities, and community involvement. Members are also given discounts from many different companies and stores through on-line shopping, such as Netflix and ipods. At graduation, members are given the opportunity to wear honor cords or medallions representing their membership in NSCS.
The OSU Chapter
Members of NSCS receive a newsletter bimonthly that contains information about volunteer opportunities, scholarship applications and deadlines, and how to apply for leadership positions at the National and chapter level, among other things. Students in the OSU chapter of NSCS also receive e-mails from OSU's representatives about meetings and local community efforts. For example, NSCS members are alerted when the Right now, the OSU chapter of the NSCS is working on community projects related to mentoring local middle and high school students in science, volunteering at a local soup kitchen, and working to promote integrity.
Some specific projects that the OSU chapter of NSCS is involved with right now include trying to raise money for the Relay for Life that is being held on May 19th and 20th and helping out the Escape Hunger program if there aren't enough volunteers. Participating in this year's Relay for Life is the OSU chapter's end-of-the-year community event. Currently, NSCS has 10 members participating in the Relay for Life and has, as of Wednesday, May 17, raised $725 as a team. The goal is to get 15 walkers participating and to raise $1000 by the end. As for the Escape Hunger program, NSCS members are notified by e-mail any week that ASOSU thinks they might be running short of volunteers and given the opportunity to help out fellow students by volunteering to work.
