The bright spot of your term

I had Mr. Lykins simultaneously with some pretty challenging classes. Even though his was a 2 hour lecture, I always looked forward to BA 230. Very infrequently do I feel like I'm getting real, practical information in a course, but not only does Mr. Lykins teach very relevant information, he goes the extra mile to show you just exactly where you're going to apply this knowledge later in life. I was actually a little skeptical of him at first, when I learned that he was an attorney (call it natural bias), but my skepticism dissolved when he started making it clear that we should question everything, maintain strong ethics, and AVOID lawsuits. Most professional, great guy.

Not very constructive but true

Ha...haha...hahahaha!!!! This guy is funny!

More stuff

Mr. Lykins is the best lecturer I have ever had! He intertwines history with law to make his Business 230 class (Business Law) a fascinating course on the rights, ethics, and legal procedures within and outside the realm of the business world. Although his attempt to make students in the class talk are often futile, he is constantly cracking jokes about whatever comes to mind but especailly Ohio and the South. I highley recommend his Business Law class and I am sure that his Business Law for non-business majors is just as entertaining. Some great quotes from Lykins are as follows;

"Our Shot at immortality: to procreate. It's also a good way to loose all your money and get no sleep."
"The largest concentration of stupid people I ever met was in law school."
"You can sue anybody for anything you want. That's the beauty of America."
"Golf is the ultimate relgious experience because every time you hit the ball you pray."
"You can fire people because they are ugly."
"Santa Clause is a Communist."
"Sit back, relax, get outraged."

Lykins

Lykins really is a great teacher. He is able to keep the attention of college students at 8:00 in the morning in a two hour business law class. His teaching style is rather energetic and his witty sarcasm keeps your attention. One thing that would benefit him, would be if he kept his politics out of his lectures. I often felt that my views were being picked on and mocked. Other than that, he is worth taking.

I took BA 230 Business Law with Dr. Lykins, and he does a good job on making a boring subject into something that is a little more interesting. He has somewhat of a blunt sense of humor (making fun of the French, people from the South) which is actually pretty darn funny at times, and it hinges on the borderline so some people might get offended. However, he assures his students that he is of good nature (he is from the South as well) and just cracks jokes to keep our attention on the monotonous material. I took him during Fall Term and we never had homework, but we did have a weekly quiz over the chapters that he discussed. The quizzes are ok as long as you attend his lectures. He throws two questions in the quizzes from the book, so it is recommended that you do read in order to answer the book questions. His lectures are based on an overhead outline that can be accessed through Blackboard, and it's convenient so that you can take notes during class easier. Besides the weekly quizzes, our class only had a final exam and that wasn't too hard since I used all of my quizzes as a study guide (which helped), but it was 100 questions and it took me a while to finish the exam. However, I hear he teaches differently now and that he gives out three essays throughout the term, along with two midterms and a final. Therefore, I am not sure if he is harder or easier now. Overall, Dr. Lykins is a good professor with an interesting sense of humor, and he is very knowledgeable in the material he teaches since he used to be a lawyer himself.

More Comments about Dan Lykins

This guy is one hell of a teacher. He makes his lectures very interesting and involves his students throughout the discussion. He answers any questions that students ask him. Mostly these questions are about the rights the students have when being hassled by the police. You can get advice from Lykins, as he worked over 15 years as a criminal defense lawyer. He relates the information he presents in class in a clear and contruct manner. One of my favorite things about the class is Lykins tells you about some cases he has worked. He will relate them to what he is teaching, to make examples clear and concrete. His tests are very easy, as long as you study, go to class, and read the book. You must read the book in order to do well. Overall, Dan Lykins is the best teacher I have had at Oregon State University.

  • Professor Daniel Lykins is an amazing teacher. He takes a subject that would seem normally rather bland and boring and actually makes it interesting. He relates the material to life so that students can understand what he is explaining, and will continue making examples until students understand what is being said or stop asking questions. I recommend reading before lecture and attending every class. If you have to miss classes for whatever reason, go to blackboard and take the notes like you would normally do in class. If you fall behind in class even only for a day or two, you really won’t understand what going on in the next class and it would be best that you went back though notes that he posts online, and take notes off of there. It really does help. Also, if you find yourself having problems in this class or not understanding a particular thing, Lykins is very willing to help the students during his office hours and will meet with you as many times as you need to succeed in the class.

  • Mr. Lykins is easily the best teacher I have had to date. He teaches a subject that few people taking it tend to be interested in ahead of time, and from everyone I have talked to afterward, they love it. The extensive knowledge that Mr. Lykins has on the subject of business law is quite astounding and because of it, he is able to tie things together to make the class much more interesting. Not only is Mr. Lykins an amazing teacher, he is also a very nice guy. I was struggling at first with his class and one day I went up and talked to him about it. He was so accepting and was one of the few teachers on this campus that actually seemed to care about his students. If you get the chance to take business law, do it just for the sake of learning from this amazing professor.

How Mr. Lykins helped me

I'm an international student and as you know, language is a big problem going to school, especially in a business law class. I went to his office many times, not at his office hours though. He was always in his office and he was there to help. He took international students very seriously and he helped me a lot. He used many real examples in his experience of dealing with criminals. He made his class fun and I really enjoyed being a student of his.

Lykins

Professor Lykins is an excellenet teacher. He understands the college student mind and presents the material in a way that his students will understand as well as enjoy. He makes the material relate to people our age. Many times in class, students will ask questions about legal issues they are dealing with, and he is more than willing to help.Often the questions were alcohol related and he answered them matter of factly, without demeaning the student. His use of history helps to understand where these laws and doctrines come from. Yet, he explains the history with a sense of humor which makes the lectures enjoyable. It is important to read for his class so you can get involved with the lecture better. I found that by reading the chapter before class, I always had random questions to ask. Professor Lykins seems to actually enjoy the off the wall questions that students will bring up. His sense of humor may offend some at first, but I think that by the end of the term you realize that his humor helps to make the class more relatable and enjoyable. He will even make fun of himself. Lykins was always available at his office hours. I had to miss a test and then could not make it to his office hours to re-take it. He let me arrange another time that worked for me. Most professors would not have been as lenient. He is approachable which is key for a student to succeed; if they feel like they can come to the teacher to ask questions. I would absolutely recommend him as a teacher.
