Valley Library

This page was constructed as the result of a hallway meeting between Dave Sullivan (College of Business) and Margaret Mellinger (Valley librarian) as an example. Our hope is that it will eventually morph into a large collection of pages with wisdom about how to use OSU's libraries most effectively.

General Information

The Oregon State University Valley library is located on the corner of Jefferson and Waldo. It is a fairly new building, with respect to some of the others on campus. In my opinion it is one of the nicer looking buildings. There are six floors and each floor is catered to students different academic needs. The main floor (2nd floor) is what you see when you walk through the main entrance. Immediately downstairs there is a coffee shop that will give you your caffeine fix for the day. The main floor is the most commonly used floor because there is computer access and printers. There is also a circulation desk to check out course materials, laptops, study rooms keys, locker keys, head phones, calculators, etc. You can check out study rooms and laptops for 3 hours. If you are checking out a laptop try not to be late because they will fine you with $5 dollars for the first half an hour that you are late and after that $10 dollar per hour. Course reserve books are one dollar per hour late and study rooms work the same way as laptops. For more information on library fines, check out the OSU Library website. If you are someone who likes to plan your schedule ahead of time, you might want to consider reserving a study room. Study rooms are available for reserve for up to two weeks in advance, this could guaranteed you a study room during midterms. The reference desk is there to assist you in searching for a specific book or finding materials on a certain topic. If you want to connect to the internet on your own laptop you need to register it at the reference desk. You can also print directly from the laptops, checked out from circulation desk, by giving a file print command and then select bill my onid account; after you do these steps you need to go to the 2nd floor to swipe your card in a machine so you can get it billed to your student account.

The other floors of the library are helpful for research and quiet studying. Be sure to look at the directory on the main floor for details about what is on each floor. Also, if you need to find specific materials for research, ask a librarian for assistance in order to locate what you need in a timely manner.

Your Favorite Floor to Study

Personally, I like to study in a place that is quiet so I can concentrate on what I need to study. The 4th floor rotunda is a quiet area designated for individual studying, but the only disadvantage is that its the only floor with no restroom. The fifth floor and sixth floor are also quiet floors, so if you want to avoid socializing at the library go to the fifth or sixth floor to get your studying done. If you want to study and socialize at the same time, the best floor to be at without being asked to be quiet is the third floor. In this floor you can also find maps, microfiches, microfilms etc.

Can't find a book at The Valley Library?

If you are looking for a specific book and can't find it, I suggest ordering through Summit. Summit is a library catalog that combines all Pacific Northwest libraries into the same database. If you are having tough luck and can't seem to find it on Summit, then I will suggest doing your search through Interlibrary Loan. ILL most likely will find your search because it puts a search in academic libraries nationwide, once the book is found, the library that owns that specific book will mail it to the Valley library so you can use it. You can check out ILL items for three weeks with an option to renew it. If you are short on money and can not afford to buy expensive textbooks, you can try these options to not have to pay for it.
