General Information

The Fashion Group International began in the 1930's. It is a global non-profit association of over 6,000 professionals of achievement and influence representing all areas of the fashion, apparel, accessories, beauty and home industries.

The goals of the organization are:

  • To advance professionalism in fashion and it's related lifestyle industries, with particular emphasis on the role and developments of women.
  • To provide a public forum for examination of important contemporary issues in fashion and the business of fashion.
  • To present timely information regarding national and global trends that have an effect on the fashion industries.
  • To attain a greater recognition of women's achievements in business.
  • To promote career opportunities in fashion.
  • To provide activities and programs that enhance networking skills and encourage interpersonal contacts so as to further the professional, social, and personal development of our members.

OSU Chapter

OSU students enrolled in a program of study leading to a career in the fashion industry are invited to join the Fashion Group International OSU Student Chapter. The student chapter meets monthly on campus for events planned to: a) provide members with insight regarding careers in the fashion industry via guest speakers, b) promote social interaction among its members c) provide services to fashion related businesses in the community, and d) participate in field trips sponsored by the student chapter. Student members are invited to participate in Fashion Group International of Portland events at special student prices. The Portland Regional Group provides student scholarships.

  • Learn how membership in professional organizations contributes to the enhancement of your career and career possibilities.
  • Increased knowledge about careers in the fashion industry.
  • Network with fashion professionals.

  • Opportunity to participate in an annual fashion show of student designs from recycled materials.
  • Opportunities to attend national FGI student events, including the Fashion Group Foundation Annual Career Day at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.
  • Enhanced awareness and information about the Fashion Group Scholarships.
  • Opportunities for visibility of student talents through Fashion Group competitions such as the design of program covers, T-shirts, and fashion shows.
  • Opportunities to advance leadership, contribute to communities, and participate in fundraising events.

Membership

Membership is $25 per year and must be submitted along with an application. Ten dollars is sent to Fashion Group International Portland and the rest is used for activities done by the OSU chapter.

May 6: Rummage Sale in the Quad 8:30am-3:30pm

May 24: Meeting to elect officers for 2006-2007

Recent events have included:

  • A field trip to Jantzen's computerized cutting facility in Vancouver, WA followed by a tour of the Jantzen design facilities and talk with their design team and concluded with a visit to Nordstrom's in Portland to hear presentations about career possibilities.
  • Speakers on campus have included the owner of a small apparel business, a children's wear designer for Daisy Kingdom, and a speaker from Target about internship opportunities.
  • An annual fashion show of student designs from recycled materials, Repeat Performance is planned and produced by the student chapter.
  • A Rummage Sale during Mom's Weekend to raise funds for the chapter.
  • A field trip to Loose Ends in Salem that included a tour of the store.
  • A volunteer opportunity at the Naturally Fun with Fiber Fashion Show in Albany.
