Exploring Oregon
Oregonian Coast
As an international student, I happen to see Oregon from a different point of view. Oregon is a beautiful place and it really catches my attention but my favorite part of Oregon, is no doubt its coast. If someone is interested to know and see one of the nature wonders, then this is the right place.
It is a nice to start from up North in Astoria and work one's way South with Cannon Beach, Manzanita, Nehalem and Bay City. All of these places are great relaxation points, with numerous opportunities for recreational activities like Kayaking, fishing, surfing, biking, hiking etc. There are some outstanding reliefs for taking great pictures of rocks and the ocean at any time of the year. Nevertheless, when it comes to exercising fishing, foreigners just as locals will have to buy a license.
The trip can carry down to Depot Bay, Lincoln City, Newport this one an hour away drive West of Corvallis, Waldport and Yachats. My favorite?! I would say Depot Bay and Yachats. The blending of the flora with the highly elevated rocks creates a beautiful scenery that can not escape a human's eye.
Further South, nice places to explore are Florence where Sea Lion Caves is situated, Coos Bay and Port Orford. The vegetation seems changing a little but there is the same ocean with huge big waves dashing on the rocks and sand and carving its way inward the coastline.
Tips for lodging and eating
Where to lodge? Pretty simple. Considering that this is a recreational type of activity, the solution is tents. There are always camping grounds on both sides of the Highway 101 that follows the coast. It may cost around $10 per person a night to lodge on the campgrounds.
Oregon has various bars and restorants on the coast that introduce some nice preparation of sea food. Fish and chips, deep fried shrimps, salmon and the famous clam and chouder are great to satisfy one's appetite. In cast of being off town, shopping before getting there is always a good solution or otherwise buying sandwiches would help too. For those who enjoy getting a feel of the nature, finding a fishing or a hunting license during for the trip is another choice.
Recreation Vehicles are wide spread communication and lodging means for the locals and also keep one on a budget. Nevertheless, others that are able and enjoy the sea roar, various possibilities like Bed&Breakfast or Lodging Houses appear. Prices here vary from $90 and over per night and even these prices depend on the time of the year and the flow of the turists.
Entertainment
A way to entertain oneself is getting involved especially during July celebration, swimming, boating, whale watching etc. If one is intereted in viting museums then or the Sea Lion Caves and the Aquarium in Newport are the one to go. The funniest part of a trip along the coast and camping are the bonfires roasting hotdogs and marshmellows around them. These are beautiful days that go by easily and the best way to close the night is by going beach combing, collecting shells.
