College of Health and Human Services

From OSU Wiki

The College of Health and Human Sciences is one of OSU’s newest colleges. Guided by the signature “Taking Care of Life”, the fourth largest college at OSU was created in 2002 with the merger of the College of Health and Human Performance and the College of Home Economics. It was a bold and successful move. Today, the College has growing enrollment, many new and renowned faculty, increasing grants, and a newly dedicated and philanthropic alumni base.

The College includes four departments and a variety of outreach programs.

  • Department of Design and Human Environment: 550 undergraduate and 27 graduate students
  • Department of Human Development and Family Sciences: 552 undergraduate and 27 graduate students
  • Department of Nutrition and Exercise Sciences 1012 undergraduate and 85 graduate students
  • Department of Public Health: 269 undergraduate and 97 graduate students
  • The OSU Extension Family and Community Development Program is also part of the College, a natural fit for this program with a statewide network working toward a healthier Oregon.

The College’s 115 faculty are responding to some of the most challenging issues facing us today, focusing on prevention strategies to promote healthy living across the lifespan…from healthy children to healthy aging. Teaching, research and outreach programs for our 2383 undergraduate and 240 graduate students address optimal nutrition for health, overcoming poverty and hunger, changing inactive lifestyles, improving the lives of children and older adults at-risk, preventing disease, addressing public policy and access to health care, and maximizing environmentally friendly materials and structures. Total annual external funding for the College is $7.8 million.

Students in the College of Health and Human Sciences enjoy the generous support of donors and this year, more than 155 students received funds to support their studies and research through 89 fellowships and scholarships. There are two endowed professorships in the College: the Jo Anne Leonard Peterson Chair in Gerontology and Family Studies and the Barbara Emily Knudson Chair in Family Policy.
