Byrne, Jim

From OSU Wiki

  • I had Byrne for both BA 211 and BA 213, he is very demanding of his students when it comes to homework and quizzes every day in class. He understands accounting very well and that comes out when he is teaching, and on average his classes have higher test scores on the final then any other teacher's class. I would recommend taking accounting from Byrne, he demands a lot but you come out on top because of him forcing you to learn the material.

  • I had Jim for BA 211, and I really liked how he taught and conducted his class. He has a lot of experience in Accounting and shared his knowledge with the class. He may seem like a difficult teacher at first, but you will learn so much throughout the term. I strongly recommend going to all of the classes, and making sure that you do all of your homework. His tests were fairly easy if you attended his classes, and he prepared you for them really well. Overall, I really liked his class and would highly recommend him for a teacher, you will benefit from it in the end.

  • I had Jim for BA211, and really enjoyed his class. He keeps you on your toes by demanding completed homework weekly and giving random quizzes but that makes you learn the material. If you go to class and do the work, his class is no problem. They best thing about him is that he demands so much from you in the term that the final is a breeze.

  • I had Jim for BA 211 and I am currently in his BA 213 class. Not only does he give out more homework than the in other similar classes, but all of the assignments have to be typed. He demands a lot from his students, but only because he trying to make us all his "Yogi Bears". Which pretty much means he wants his students be 'smarter than the average student'. He tries really hard to present the course material in a way that is easy to grasp, and often times will share shortcuts that he's learned over the years to make things less complicated. I would highly suggest going to EVERY class. Lectures are very important, plus you never know when he will give a quiz. It is also good to ask questions when you don't understand something. Jim is really approachable and welcoming to students who come in during his office hours, and he's always willing to help.

  • I am currently in Byrne's BA 213 and I think he is a great teacher. He is one of the very few teachers, that I have ever met, that understands his students and understands how to actually teach. He is the type of teacher that a student will say (before having him of course) 'If I was ever a teacher I would be like [this]...' and then you have him and you think, 'He is the type of teacher I have always wanted.' He does demand a lot from his students but it is only because he knows what is best for them. Don't worry about the quizzes, just show up to all the classes and you'll come out fine.

  • I took 211 from Jim Byrnes winter term. After one month of his class, I became drawn to financial accounting and decided to declare my option in accounting. I would have to say that this is due to his personality and charisma as a teacher. This was not due to the fact of him being a good teacher. He is poor at explaining topics and uses intimidation as a strategy for making you think. I like that type of pressure, but I had to learn most of the material on my own. Except for certain parts of the book that were confusing he taught simpler approaches that achieved the same things. I made sure I got him for 213 as well because if you are going into accounting you will be "smarter than the average bear" having Jim Byrnes.

Jim Byrne – BA211

This particular class was difficult. I’m not sure that it was the class, or if it was Jim Byrne. He had some real life experiences that he incorporated, but they sometimes just made it confusing. There is homework for every class period, which must be typed. His test are weighted more heavily on show your work problems than multiple choice. If you were able to ask him a question, either in or out of class, he some how managed to always make you feel like you were stupid. His style of teaching seemed to discourage interaction between him and his students.

I have taken both 211 and 213 and from Jim Byrne and I’m not going to lie it was a difficult class, but I wouldn’t have wanted to take either of these classes from anyone else. He gave out more homework and all the other teacher, harder tests and random quizzes which made you have to go to class in order to succeed. He wanted all of his students to be his “Yogi Bear,” which basically means that he wants his students to be smarted than the average bear. But, with all the extra work and help that is available for every student, I believe that it made succeeding during the final a whole lot easier. He wanted his students not only to understand what to do, but why and that really helped.
