Types of dance
Ballroom Dances
Waltz
The waltz is a slow traditional dance taught in the ballroom 1, 2 and 3 class, with a 3 count beat. It uses music with 90 to 120 beats per minute. It is danced in closed dance position.
Foxtrot
Like the waltz this is a traditional dance, taught in the ballroom 1 class on campus, and more in ballroom 2 and 3, it is a 4 count beat, but you can use waltz moves in which you extend the first beat, and skip over the second. It is also danced in closed dance position.
Single Time Swing
This is the only type of swing taught in the ballroom dance classes, it is called single time swing due to the fact, that you never take more than 1 step per beat. It is a 4 count beat. It is danced in a semi open dance position.
Tango
This is the 4th and final type of dance taught in the ballroom set, it is a 4 count beat, danced in closed position.
Club Dances
Nightclub two Step
Commonly but incorrectly referred to as nightclub, this is a slower dance than most, it has a 2 count beat. It is danced in closed dance position, and is one of the more advanced dances, taught in the ballroom club class, along with Hustle.
Hustle
This fast dance is danced in a 6 count beat, in a variety of positions. It is an advanced dance.
Misc Dance and swing
Viennese Waltz
This is a Ballroom version of a dance from Vienna. It is not the same as the dance that is danced in Vienna, it’s a Ballroom version made for America. It’s an advanced dance, that constantly spins, in closed position, it is taught in the Ballroom 2 class. It is a 6 count basic, and every basic makes a full 360 degree rotation.
Lindy Hop
This type of swing is a very bouncy generally slow dance. It is commonly danced to 20’s big band music, and can be mixed with Single Time Swing, though generally Single Time swing is faster.
West Coast Swing
This is a faster and smoother version of Lindy Hop that is now very different. It is a 6 or 8 count beat, depending on what you are doing. West coast songs are generally from low 70 beats per minute up to as high as 145, which is extremely fast.
