Chicken
Chicken meat that has been sitting out for a couple days will work just fine to catch some crab.
Mink
You can buy mink in Newport at the Newport Marina Store - Mink is very handy if the Sea Lions keep stealing your chicken. Sea Lions do not like to eat mink and therefore will leave your bait alone!
Fish
Fish is smelly...not doubting that. But the smelliest fish you can find, as disgusting as it sounds, will be in the dumpsters by the fish cleaning tables located at the Newport Marina. You can find huge halibut carcasses and rock fish. The Sea Lions do like the fish but so do the crab- grab plenty. Be prepared and bring garbage bags.
Other
If you are crabbing from a pier, don't be afraid to ask someone that is departing if you can have their leftovers! You can get some very good stuff- and variety!
