The material itself is very straight forward, in fact, if you have any previous accounting experience from high school, then this course should practically teach itself. However, the material isn't the issue that people seem to be having with this course, but rather the professor. More specifically, Laurie Solum. Its clear that she has experience in the field of accounting and she knows what she is talking about, however, she has no experience teaching or mentoring students. In fact, this is the first and only class she has ever taught. When introducing herself at the begining of the term, she told our class of probably sixty students that she has no experience as a teacher and she was offered this position to fill in for one of the other professors from last year (or something along those lines). As an actual profession, she is in charge of the student housing and dining services as the sole accountant. I'm not quite sure why she is teaching BA211, and I am very confused as to why the college of Business would bring her in as a number one accounting replacement. As students, we pay a fairly large amount of money to get an extended education by what I had considered, trained professionals, until now. I don't mean to nag on Laurie Solum by any means, I simply feel that this class section in particular is being shorted out from the essential foundation of accounting. So, while the class material itself is not proving to be tough by any means, the serious lack of communication and teaching experience seems to be taking its toll on the majority of the the class.

This class is tough. I recommend NOT missing any classes for the first two weeks; there is a LOT of important material that's covered right off the bat. I missed a class the first week, and got pretty behind. I also had a first-time instructor who had never taught before, which probably made it tougher to get through the class and the material. I ended up having to withdraw from the class. Does anyone have suggestions on who to take Financial Accounting from?

This class is fairly difficult. I had Jim Byrne, a funny older guy who's been teaching here awhile. He did a good job teaching the material, it's just sometimes compicated and tricky, and the homework assignments take forever to do. Prof. Byrne is very friendly and will work with you until you understand the stuff. I would strongly recommend never skipping this class, it moves pretty fast and if you miss one day, you get behind fast. It can also be pretty dry, unless you love working with numbers all the time. Believe me, it gets old pretty fast. Just memorize the vocab from the book, and study the in-class quizzes and you should be ok. Also, I would recommend trying to get Jim Byrne as your teacher, for BA211 and 213. (Note to person above me: get Byrne for accounting)

I am currently taking this course as a sohpomore and I recommend not missing the lectures. Reading the appropriate chapters before the lecture that will cover them helps a lot as well. This class can be very confusing for students who have never seen accounting before reaching college. Fortunately I took four years of accounting in high school before I entered this class. This class covers all the very basics of accounting. If you take this course and are having trouble with the concepts there is tutoring available for students. To succeed in this class it is very important you stay ahead and not fall behind.

Accounting in general is just like math, if you don't understand the initial material, you should put extra effort into understanding it now, because everything just builds on the concept before it. If you don't get it now, you're going to have an even more difficult time later. And you can't just write it off as nothing because you also have to take Managerial Accounting after this class. But, having said that, the course is on the more difficult side and is time consuming to do the homework. But if you have a good teacher, it makes it a lot easier. I think the first person who commented on this subject probably had Melinda Perez, and it was her first time teaching it then. But she has gotten a lot better and makes things easier to understand in class. She's friendly and more than willing to help you but you have to ask her! So many people in class don't speak up and in the end, they're the ones who lose out and then end up complaining that the 'class' is too hard...

I'm currently taking this class and make no mistake, this class is tough for students that have never been exposed to accounting before. My professor is teaching the class for the first time and it makes it hard to understand but she knows her stuff. I don't recommend missing class because so much is covered each class. The online OneKey program is horrible, the best way to learn accounting is pencil and paper even if most of it is computerized today.
