Azalea House

About

  • Azalea house is an all girls co-operative living residence. There are approximately 55 girls that live there. Azalea is affiliated with campus, therefore has no religious affiliation, although, a majority of the girls attend church and practice religion.
  • Currently the cook for the house is Kevin. He is very friendly and the girls like to talk to him about various things that are happening in their lives. Not to mention he is a GREAT cook! He cooks lunch and dinner Monday through Friday. On the weekends the girls fend for themselves with the extra food kept in the kitchen and the leftover food from the lunch and dinners that week.
  • The girls living at AZA are required to help in different chores assigned to keep up the house. Some examples are: putting out breakfast, dishes, cleaning the bathrooms, and vacuuming. If a girl misses her chore and had not gotten somebody else to cover it for her, she will get a fine of a specified money amount (that was given at the beginning of the year).
  • Monday nights are formal dinners. Girls are expected to dress appropriately and there is a prayer before dinner. They also sing the Azalea House song. There are no guests allowed on Monday nights. But during the other days/nights of the week the girls are allowed to bring lunch/dinner guests over. Monday night dinners are not required.
  • Azalea participates in different "socials" put on by the elected social people (usually 2 girls) in the house. Socials involve different activities usually with the other co-ops. Every term there is a house dance.
  • The girls are required to sleep on the sleeping porch. The sleeping porch has approximately 20-triple beds (three beds stacked instead of the traditional 2 of a bunk bed). Each girl is assigned a bed at the beginning of the year where they reside the rest of the year (unless 2 girls trade). Boys are not allowed in the sleeping porches or the bathrooms. There is a guest bathroom that both men and women can use. The showers and laundry facilities are located in the girl's upstairs bathroom.

  • Girls have study rooms, where their personal items are kept. They are not allowed to sleep in these rooms. These rooms are usually shared by 2 to 4 girls, depending on the room size. They switch rooms every term.

Location

  • Azalea House is located on the corner of 11th and Madison St. at the edge of campus. Madison street is between Monroe and Jefferson. It is not a through Street. Avery Lodge, Oxford, and Dixon surround Azalea house.
