Argyres, Peter

From OSU Wiki

-Math 241, Math 245 Peter is a great math teacher. I have gotten consistent "C"s in math since 7th grade, and I managed to pull a "B" in his class. He explains things as clearly as possible. Something that was really helpful, was that he was patient when he taught; he would wait until everyone had the notes written down. Even in the Milam auditorium, he would accept questions from whoever had them. One negative thing, Peter has really long nails. Sometimes he will freeze the frame on the overhead, and you are forced to stare at his long, sharp nails. It really adds excitement to the class. I recommend Peter as a math teacher.

-I had Argyres for Mth 245 winter term 2006. I had not done well in the math classes here, and in this class I got a B+. He explained everything so clearly that I had no problem passing this class. The only thing that is hard is that he has quizzes in his recitation, so if you want 20 points you have to go to them. He also is really easy going if you received too little of points on something he has no problem adjusting your grade.

Great Teacher

Honestly, I was really apprehensive about taking calculus because I didn't do so great in high school when I took it then. But having Argyres for 241 after having him for 245 was really good. He makes the material easier to understand and explains it clearly. The practice test is very similar to the actual exam. I understand that I had a slight advantage because this wasn't the first time I took calculus, but if you put in a little effort, you'll do well.

Beware

Argyres has tests that will seriously F you in the A. He is a good teacher but his long nails makes him hard to watch. Also, he will spend one day on something, act like its not important, then have like half the fing test be on that crap.

I had seriously bombed one of the quizes, but done well in the class overall. Unfortunately, I was one point away from a B, but he still gave me a C+ --even after I had talked to him. I wish I had S/U'd MTH 245.

Great!

Peter taught the Math 241 class I took in the spring. It was my first term at OSU and I was a little nervous. I didn’t know what to expect from the professors. As it turns out, being in his class was great! He has a way of explaining math so that it makes sense and is easy to understand.

In some math classes, I just followed the motions, but didn't really understand what I was doing. In this class everything made sense and I knew exactly what was going on. He is very patient and well spoken.

I definitely recommend taking math from Peter Argyres. I know that everyone has different learning styles, but I would encourage people to at least try him out!

Good Teacher

He explains complex subjects in really easy to understand ways. I expected college professors to just write down the material and expect you to understand it, but he really wanted everyone to understand. The 200 person class felt like a high school one, as he took a lot of questions and tried to make sure everyone understood. That being said, his tests (midterm at least) are hard, so you better study. If you really know the material you can get an A (which is the point) but don't expect to half-ass it like you can in some classes (regarding MATH 241). I didn't find the homework assignments too difficult either, most can be done in less than an hour.

Overall, I loved his class and would reccomend him as a teacher. Just prepare to actually work at things.

Best Math Prof at OSU

I had him for MTH 241 my freshman year and was a little worried becuase I took calculus in high school and barley passed with a C so I thought this would be no different. But was it ever. He is the best math prof I have ever had. He really makes sure you know what is going on and how you apply it to everyday life and not just how to use the formula when given certain numbers. One thing that it great about his class is the homework and quizzes that you take in recitation. In previous math classes there was homework but you didn't turn it in for a grade, it was just for your own good. But seriously, when the homework is like that, who actually does it? With him you have to turn it in for a grade and you have to make a good effort at it all, for it to count. So going into the first midterm I felt very ready to take the test without having to study much beause of all the work I already did outside of class for the homework. I aced the midterm and ended up getting an A in the class, but just becuase I got an A isn't the reason why I think he is such a great prof. Everything he does in class and all his examples have meaning in the class and thats a reason why I think he is the best math prof and OSU.

I then had him for MTH 245 where it was the same scenario, however this time all the material was brand new for me. He had the course the same way as MTH 241 and the result was the same. Overall I have never had a better professor than him.

Great Math Prof

I had him for math 241. What makes him so good is he gets teaching math. That is he knows math is basically dry and that you have to understand what he's writing down, not just copy it. He atually explains things, stops to take questions, does tons of examples, speaks loudly, and seems to really care. His tests are hard, but im OK with that since the guy made the material so much clearer than other math profs I've had. Two thumbs up.
