History of Alpha Gamma Rho

Alpha Gamma Rho [1] started in December 6, 1923. Their were four men that build this Agriculture Fraternity. They believed in themselves and others in their passion in agriculture interests. We try to pass on the same feelings as they had to our new generations.

How AGR got started at Oregon State was buy three member of a different AGR chapter at a different school. The three members came from the Kappa Tau chapter at UC Davis. They transferred up to Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University) to finish their school. They had the drive to put in an AGR at Oregon State University.

The first member of the Alpha Gamma Rho was Professor E. L. "Dad" Potter. After Potter was considered a member they recruited a few more members were recruited. The club petitioned to become a local fraternity on campus. The chapter was granted to be a fraternity member on campus. Their first house was on the corner of 25th and Monroe. That is were campus connection and Subway are located today.

The AGR's stayed at 25th and Monroe for 29 years. Then they decided to build a new house. The members moved into the new home in 1952. Located at 331 NW 26th street, it is at the same location of the house we have now. The AGR house was the first new fraternity that was built on campus since 1929. The new house had a lot of donation from alumni; this kept the cost of the house down. The alumni also helped build the house, plus they did all the ground work.

After the house was build they dedicated parts of the house to various people that had dedicated a lot to the house. The den is dedicated to Mom Liddle, she was the first house mom AGR's had, and she was also the cook at the fraternity. The front entry is dedicated to Mom Marsh. The basketball quart is dedicated to Mom Norris. She served as house mom for five years at the AGR fraternity. All the dedications are to remember the women who were apart of the AGR fraternity and how they touched our lives.

AGR at OSU Today

On campus this year we have about 34 active members. A few of them are live outs this year. We do informal rush, we have a recruitment chair that recruits potential members during the summer and through school the year. We are a National Agriculture and Resource Fraternity. To be apart of out fraternity you have to have some Ag background or be apart of the agriculture college.

The members of the AGR house are involved in a number of OSU activities. We try to get our members involved with a Club that they are interested in. We find that it develops a person more to get out and get involved and participate in an activity. We have members that hold offices on the Agriculture Executive Council, Senate, Club offices, and the Inter Fraternity Council Offices.
