Research Grants

The College has continued to make strategic investments in support of its research mission by allocating funds for internal research and equipment grants to promote the competitiveness of extramural grant applications and by recruiting and mentoring faculty who have a high potential for developing productive research programs. These efforts were reflected in the high proportion (approximately half) of academic faculty in the Department of Biomedical Sciences who had federally funded research grants.
Efforts to integrate research activities with other units on campus were significantly advanced in FY10 with the creation of the new Division of Health Sciences. In collaboration with the College of Pharmacy and the College of Health and Human Sciences, several principal goals were identified to advance Phase II of the OSU strategic plan in the area of Improving Human Health and Wellness. These included development of integrative, cross disciplinary research, together with interdisciplinary graduate programs. Initial steps to realize this goal were accomplished and include:
- participation of College faculty in a mentored research grant development workshop that will extend over several months and culminate in submission of grant applications to extramural agencies;
- creation of a $75K divisional seed grant program to promote interdisciplinary research; and
- development of a plan for strategic recruitment of 10 new research faculty FTEs across the division over the next 2 years funded by the Provost’s Faculty Investment Initiative.
