A considerable proportion of my research effort is focused on health and disease issues of aquatic animals, with an emphasis on fish and invertebrates. Diverse groups and species of animals are the subject of these investigations. Most recently, this has involved a survey of the causes of post-shipping losses in recently imported marine ornamental fish.. With academic and industry collaborators, we are now developing a model system of the shipping process to better characterize the role of stress and electrolyte imbalance in post-shipping mortalities in these fish. In cooperation with other laboratories on the OSU campus, the Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii, we are also contributing to health-related research projects involving koi, salmonids, and zebrafish.
