My research interests are primarily in immune response to infectious disease and in camelid metabolic diseases. Our laboratory has developed a PCR-based assay forMycoplasma haemolama (formerly Eperythrozoon spp.), and we have used this to study the pathogenesis and response to treatment of this infection in llamas and alpacas. We have also been studying cell-mediated immune responses to infection of horses with Sarcocystis neurona, a protozoan that causes neurologic disease in horses. We have ongoing studies of the causes and correlates of hepatic lipidosis in camelids and collaborate on many studies of regulation of carbohydrate and fat metabolism in camelids. I also have an interest in wildlife infectious disease, immunology, and hematology. Recent projects in those areas include hematology and clinical chemistry of rockfish, clinical chemistry and hemotropic parasites of sage grouse related to habitat, and immune features of the deer hair loss syndrome.
