Areas of Interest

Dr. Blythe's research interests are in three distinct areas. Trained as a veterinary neurologist, she has studied equine neurological diseases including equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy and the role of vitamin E in its pathogenesis, equine temporohyoid-osteoarthropathy, and equine protozoal myelopathy. Mapping of the peripheral nervous system by neurophysiological techniques has resulted in sensory maps that allow a clinician to localize acute peripheral nerve injuries by testing the horse for perception of touch and pain in various cutaneous areas of the limbs. A second area of interest is in care of the racing and retired Greyhound as well as drug testing in this breed of racing animals. The third area of interest is in toxic plants in collaboration with Dr. Morrie Craig's laboratory with specific interest in endophytic fungus and pyrrolizidine alkaloid toxicosis.
