Summer Term Enrollment
Reporting Enrollment
Summer classes are offered as 1-week, 3-week, 4-week, 8- week, and 11-week sessions. Reporting enrollment to the VA is broken down according to credits per session.
For example, if a undergraduate student were enrolled in 8 credit hours during the 11 week session and 4 credit hours during a 4 week session their enrollment status would be full time only for the dates in which their 11 week and 4 week session enrollment overlapped.
Summer Session Dates
Oregon State University's summer term is divided into six sessions. The sessions vary from one to eleven week increments. See example below:

In order to be considered a full time student according to the VA, you can:
- Register for 12 credits for the 11 week session ( session one) that runs from June to September.
If you plan to enroll in any session other than session one, you can:
- Register for course credits equaling the number of weeks in a particular session to equal full time for that session.
The basic formula for undergraduates:
| Session | Requirements for Full-Time Enrollment | Requirements for Half-Time Enrollment |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Week Session | 1 Credit |
N/A |
| 2 Week Session | 3 Credits |
2 Credits |
| 3 Week Session | 4 Credits |
2 Credits |
| 8 Week Session | 8 Credits |
4 Credits |
| 11 Week Session | 12 Credits |
6 Credits |
For example:
- Session #2 is 4 weeks the number of credits would have to be 4 or more to equal full time.
Your benefits will cover a session for full time only for the time frame the session is in: If the session begins on June 21, 2010 and ends on July 7, 2010, the benefits will also begin and end within that frame of time. You will not be covered for the whole summer.
If your courses are in sessions that overlap the credits can be counted together from each session to total the full time amount you would need.
For example:
- If session 2 for 4 weeks had 2 credit hours of registration and the following session #3, the 8 week session had 6 credit hours of registration both sessions together would equal the full time for #2 and full time for #3. The overlap calculations are done with the VA.
If there are gaps between sessions such as being registered for session #2, from June through July full time and then later in the summer registered for full time in session #5, from mid August to September, then Your benefits will cover your full time benefits for those two sessions, nothing before or between.
The VA is very specific about each session and what they will pay for summer session.
Miscalculation of summer registration in relation to what you think you will receive for benefits can cause misunderstanding and financial hardship
