Frequently Asked Questions

After I move in how long do I have to wait before I make a room change?

We generally ask students to give their first room assignment a two week trial run before requesting a move. It takes about two weeks for all the buildings to settle and for us to figure out who didn't show up and what rooms are open. After the first two weeks of the term if you are still unhappy with your assignment visit with your Resident Director (RD) to talk about what building might be best for you. You will work with your RD to fill out a room change form and then you will work with the service center to facilitate your move.

If you are out of money on your ID card please visit the ID Center located in room 215 of the Memorial union to add money. Money added will no longer be charged to your student account. You will need to make a payment using cash, check, Visa or MasterCard. You will no longer be able to add money at the service centers or at the central housing office.

What if I want to move off campus in the middle of the year?

UHDS contracts are for one academic year. You could stay on campus for one term, but you will be charged a cancellation fee for breaking your contract. If you cancel your contract and remain an OSU student, you will be assessed the appropriate cancellation fee for the terms that are remaining in the academic year. If you withdraw from the University and remain withdrawn for the entire year or are enrolled in a University sanctioned exchange program or internship, you are exempt from the cancellation fee. You will need to provide appropriate documentation in order for the fee to be waived. If you leave housing any time after the start of the term, you will be charged $6.00 per day for the amount of time left on your contract, which ends on the last day of spring term. The charge equates to $1368 for the entire contract period. You can obtain a contract cancellation form at your service center and schedule a short appointment with an Assistant Director of Residential Life to discuss your situation and a possible appeal.

How do I appeal housing charges on my account?

If there are charges on your account such as a cancellation fee or damage fee you would like to appeal you will need to pick up an appeal from at the central housing office. You will fill out the appeal from, attach a letter and turn it into the central office. The appeal will go before the appeal committee, and once a decision is made you will be notified. The appeal committee meets once or twice a month so it can take about a month before you hear the result of your appeal.

What if I am not getting along with my roommate?

Connect with you Resident Assistant (RA) to complete a Roommate Agreement with your roommate. This informal contract will offer each of you boundaries and expectations that they can lay out for each other, and agree to adhere to. If the situation progresses past a point of reconciliation or mediation, we do allow you to make a room or building change. UHDS cannot make a student move out of a room, if you do not want to live with your roommate anymore you will be the one who will move out. You can begin the room moving process by contacting your Resident or Cooperative Director and obtaining a Room Change Form. You will need to work with the Service Center to identify a new placement and complete the room change process.
