CSI interns participate in one of five internships during the course of the academic year. In 2012-13, the internships include:

Internship A - Fall 2012 (6 weeks)

Residential Education: Leadership Development

Supervisor:  Christopher Hughbanks, Leadership Development and Involvement Coordinator (LDIC), & Jeffrey Tsang, Late Night and Leadership Programming Assistant

Unit Name:  Residential Education

Unit Functions:  Responsible for providing a living-learning environment as a gateway for academic and personal success.  The Residential Education Unit manages programs, functions, and services in the residence halls that promote community, academic, personal, and social development, as well as connectedness to the greater institution. 

Description:  CSIs will research leadership development/involvement curriculums, courses, programs, and student leader trainings at OSU comparator institutions in the Pacific Northwest and across the country. In partnership and with direction from the Late Night & Leadership Program Assistant, CSIs will develop a proposed leadership engagement series, or U-ENGAGE course; a social justice training design to be implemented with Hall Council and Cooperative Execs.

Dining Online Menus & Nutrition Information Review

Supervisor: Tara Sanders, UHDS Registered Dietitian

Unit Name:  Dining Services

Unit Functions:  Responsible for providing a living-learning environment as a gateway for academic and personal success. The mission of Dining Services is to provide meals, furnish retail and catering food service to students, faculty, staff, conference groups and campus visitors. As a self-funded auxiliary, Dining Services supports the residential life experience, promotes nutrition education, encourages diversity and cultural awareness, and enhances the image of the University.

Description: CSIs will learn about UHDS online menus and will cross check the nutrition, allergy and menu item information for accuracy. They will physically go to each dining unit and cross check what is on the menu to what is being served; will check nutrition, ingredient, and allergy information for each item posted to ensure it is correct. CSIs will learn how to use food service management software (EATEC) to post information.

RA Search Marketing and Outreach Support

Supervisor:  Claudia Gonzalez, Resident Director, Poling Hall

Unit Name: Residential Education

Unit Functions: Responsible for providing a living-learning environment as a gateway for academic and personal success.  The Residential Education Unit manages programs, functions, and services in the residence halls that promote community, academic, personal, and social development, as well as connectedness to the greater institution. 

Description:  CSIs will learn about effective strategies for promoting/marketing the Resident Assistant position during the RA Search process.  They will gain an understanding of the RA position and its role in Residential Education.  They will work independently, and as part of a larger RA Search Committee. They will also manage/develop advertising for 2013-14 RA search (flyers, posters, electronic); serve on RA Search Committee with team of RDs, RAs, and CDs; and update and outreach to departments, student organizations, and other student support offices to promote position.  By the end of the internship the CSIs will complete all marketing for RA Search completed and post it online.

Multimedia and Social Media Projects

Supervisor:  Nancy Raskauskas, Online Marketing Specialist

Unit Name:  Marketing, Assessment & Communication

Unit Functions:  Educates incoming and first-year students about the choices available to them on campus through direct mail and email, then directing them to learn more via our website content such as hall pages and virtual tours; and finally greeting them with on- and off-campus visit days and private tours. We also foster digital communities through our public website and social networks, as well as the private OSU on Facebook application that allow our students to mingle online before ever setting foot on campus. Throughout the academic year, we highlight UHDS and on-campus offerings via a bi-weekly eNewsletter, website, blog and social media posts, posters and videos in our facilities.

Description:  CSIs will work closely with the Online Marketing Specialist to practice and grow skills in basic writing, photography, videography, design, and web communications. CSIs will dive into the creative process of marketing to create and critique work. They will explore their own answer to the question: How can we use social networks to inform and engage the OSU community? By the end of the internship the CSIs will complete an online resume via LinkedIn or a custom page; Beaver Movie Channel video clip; published a blog post on the UHDS Experience of a Lifetime blog; and a set of at least 10 favorite photos or a 1-minute video on any topic or event related to UHDS.

Operations Office Support

Supervisor:  Dawn Snyder, Operations Manager, Residential Conferences and Building Services & Aimee Scrivens, Residential Conferences and Building Services Coordinator

Unit Name: Operations and Facilities

Unit Functions:  We maintain UHDS systems and facilities to promote the success of our students and staff. Assignments, maintenance, service centers, the Homestay program, family housing, facilities planning, and residential conferences are all part of the Operations and Facilities unit.

Description: CSIs will create an informational binder for our scholars and interns, including information about Corvallis, OSU, and the surrounding area. In addition, the binder will include information about UHDS and OSU policies and procedures, emergency protocols, and general FAQs. CSIs will help out with the operations of our Scholar and Intern program.

 

Internship B - Winter/Spring 2013 (12 weeks) 

Residential Education: Leadership Development

Unit Name:  Residential Education

Unit Functions:  Responsible for providing a living-learning environment as a gateway for academic and personal success.  The Residential Education Unit manages programs, functions, and services in the residence halls that promote community, academic, personal, and social development, as well as connectedness to the greater institution. 

Description:  In partnership and with direction from the Late Night & Leadership Program Assistant, CSI will co-facilitate potential engagement series activities, lessons, and social justice training/modules in our residential and cooperative communities. CSIs will also assess the impact of these initiatives.

Unit Name: Residential Education

Unit Functions: Responsible for providing a living-learning environment as a gateway for academic and personal success.  The Residential Education Unit manages programs, functions, and services in the residence halls that promote community, academic, personal, and social development, as well as connectedness to the greater institution. 

Description:  CSIs will aid in the administrative portion of the Student Staff class committee meetings and logistics of the course.  They will learn the philosophy by which the residence halls operate and will be asked to provide their perspective as residents and as first year students. They will work closely with the RDs and RAs and will be part of the committee. They will keep record of minutes of the committee meetings, help with research for the course and course topics, aid in the creation of assignments, and serve in the Student Staff class (AHE 199) committee. By the end of the internship CSIs will complete a syllabus and keep proper records of the process.

Unit Name: Operations and Facilities

Unit Functions: We maintain UHDS systems and facilities to promote the success of our students and staff. Assignments, maintenance, service centers, the Homestay program, family housing, facilities planning, and residential conferences are all part of the Operations and Facilities unit.

Description:  CSIs will write a  summary report of the research and information gathered about benchmarking against other PAC-12 and comparator schools on their first year live-in requirements. Developing a report on the best practices and successful programming efforts put into place at other institutions and a small library of articles of resources the topics place at other institutions.

Dining Marketing

Supervisor: Dining Marketing Project Manager, Megan Full

Unit Name: Marketing, Assessment, Communications & Diversity (MACD)

Unit Functions: Provide UHDS marketing and assessment expertise, promotions support, and diversity and social justice related programs and opportunities.

Description: CSIs will learn about dining marketing and promotions and work on promotions campaign for fall cultural cuisine event. Specifically, CSIs will discover and learn about the field of marketing and promotions, identify promotions/outreach opportunities for students, and participate in the design process for the “Taste of the Mediterranean” campaign. By the end of the internship CSIs will better understand the field of marketing and promotions and complete “Taste of the Mediterranean” promotional materials for portfolio.

Residence Education Staff Selection

Supervisor: Assistant Directors of Residence Education, David Craig and David Akana

Unit Name: Residence Education

Unit Functions: Responsible for the programs and management of 13 residence halls and 4 co-op houses at OSU, including 124 student employees and  approximately 20 professional employees.

Description: CSIs will learn about the selection processes for Resident Assistants (RAs) and Resident Directors (RDs). CSIs will assist with developing marketing plans and materials for recruitment of RA and RD applicants. Specifically, CSIs will be involved in editing the RD selection brochure and assisting the development of RA selection materials. By the end of this internship CSIs will understand the revision process for publication, have revised brochure for RD search and have created a list of campus student leader contacts for RA selection.

Dining Systems Operations

Supervisor: Dining Operations Manager, Kimberly Copeland

Unit Name: Dining Services

Unit Functions: Provide world class customer service for our students, guests and university partners in dining centers. Dining operations maintains a menu management/inventory system, trains system users, maintains costs, sales analysis, web menus and operational procedures.

Description: CSIs will learn how to use the menu management/inventory system (Eatec) used by all dining centers and start creation of instructional documents for system use. CSIs will also learn the importance of sharing knowledge between multiple campus dining partners to obtain a cohesive outcome, as well as, multiple office programs like Excel and Publisher. By the end of the internship CSIs will have a solid understanding and foundation to begin building an instructional manual for the menu management/inventory system.

Social Media Marketing

Supervisor: Online Marketing Specialist, Nancy Raskauskas; and Assistant Director, MACD, Jennifer Viña

Unit Name: Marketing, Assessment, Communications & Diversity (MACD)

Unit Functions: Responsible for all marketing, communications and promotions for the University Housing and Dining (UHDS). MACD also oversees the UHDS Diversity Initiative.

Description: CSIs will learn about the department’s marketing objectives and projects and how they relate to social media goals when communicating with students and families. CSIs will help with marketing projects, including print publications and online marketing campaigns. CSIs will also assist with visit programs and preparation for recruitment events. By the end of the internship CSIs will learn about information communicated to students online via the UHDS website and social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, and UHDS blogs and will also create a plan for a video that will be utilized when recruiting students to live on campus.

Homestay Program Support

Supervisor: Homestay Program Coordinator, Jacqueline Chambers

Unit Name: Operations and Facilities

Unit Functions: Responsible for providing a living-learning environment as a gateway for academic and personal success. The Homestay program connects international students to local host families so that they may have a richer “American” experience.

Description: CSIs will learn about the needs of international students on campus and those of families hosting international students in their homes in Corvallis. CSIs will research ways to welcome international students in host families, living challenges for host families, and culturally specific information about the countries represented in our Homestay Program. The CSIs will use their knowledge gained from research to help coordinate educational programs for host families around these topics. By the end of the internship CSIs will learn about our international student population and will have coordinated 2-3 program for host families.

Gender Inclusive Living Program Implementation Projects

Unit: Residential Education                           
Supervisor: Willie Morgan

This CAMP Scholar Internship has been developed for CAMP Scholar Interns (CSIs) interested in educational program development and implementation, as well as the concept of building community amongst difference in a college‐housing setting. Specifically, CSI students will:

  1. Learn about the goals and objectives of living‐learning communities in college residence halls
  2. Learn about the subjects of gender inclusive living communities and gender variant identities
  3. Research and compile resource educational materials and resource contacts

Project tasks:

  1. Researching learning materials about gender variant identities and inclusive learning values
  2. Creating educational materials for students and staff, such as poster campaigns, bulletin boards, and program creation
  3. Researching learning materials about gender variant identities and inclusive learning values
  4. Creating a gender inclusive living manual for staff and student leaders for future years which will include foundational reading materials, campus resources and contacts, programmatic support resources, etc.

Nutrition and Wellness Research and Education

Unit: Dining Services
Supervisors: Tara Sanders

Within this internship opportunity, CSI students will:

  1. Receive a unit orientation that will include shadowing the supervisors in a variety of operation meetings to gain a broad understanding of the dining program.
  2. Participate in the all phases of development and assessment of a survey to assess current number of residents that have special dietary considerations including vegan, vegetarian, flexitarian (almost vegetarian), gluten free, Kosher or Halal.
  3.  CSI’s will have an opportunity for survey collection, tallying, assessment and evaluation.
  4.  CSI’s will develop a brief PowerPoint presentation including findings, implications, and recommendations.

Dining Promotion

Unit: Marketing, Assessment, Communications & Diversity            
Supervisor: Megan Full

The Fall Term CAMP Scholar Internship has been developed for CAMP Scholar Interns (CSIs) interested in understanding dining marketing at UHDS and gaining experience in creating publications and coordinating special events. Specifically, CSI students will:

  1. Learn about the structure of dining services and how dining marketing operates
  2. Experience and contribute to the creative process of putting together text, content and photos for a publication.
  3. Assist with educational and entertainment portions of the fall term cultural dining event occurring in November.
  4. Research and prepare for Mediterranean concept grand opening event.
  1. Assist in coordination of Grand Opening event for UHDS’ new Mediterranean dining concept.  Interns will learn the details of putting together a large scale event, including arranging entertainment, give-a-way items, educational materials
  2. Assist the Dining Marketing Project Manager in putting together one or two publications, brochures, postcards, etc.
  3. Contribute to the creative process of putting together text, content and photos for a publication, including meeting with student designers to share ideas for the design layout
  4. Work on brainstorming for future dining marketing campaigns.

Facilities Management & Planning

Unit: Operations & Facilities
Supervisor: Joe Evans

Within this internship CSI students will:

  1. Participate in Operations & Facilities management meetings to gain a general understanding of the various aspects and challenges of managing facilities for 3800 students.
  2. Participate in the development of an RFP that will be used to solicit proposals from firms to develop a UHDS master plan that will guide new construction and renovations over the course of the next 10‐15 years.
  3. Develop a comprehensive building management guide that can be used as a reference by Resident Directors, Resident Assistants and other non‐technical building managers.

Leadership and Development

Unit: Residential Education
Supervisor: Shelly Clark

Within this internship CSI students will:

  1. Receive orientation to the unit and staff with Residential Education.
  2. Receive orientation, introductions, and objectives for the staff involved with Leadership and Involvement for Oregon State University.
  3. Participate in activities associated with the Residence Hall Association, Cooperative Houses, Late Night Activities, and other campus programming groups.
  4. Design, implement, and interpret data from a tool that will assist other students in participating and planning events.
