New Programs for 2008-09

University Housing & Dining Services is excited to feature several new or expanded program offerings for the 2008-09 academic year.

Early Room Selection

By choosing to live on campus at OSU, you now have the opportunity to select your own housing assignment for 2008-2009 starting in March! You can lock in your room or co-op assignment earlier than ever before-and earlier than other colleges and universities in Oregon.

    Returning Students
Why wait to figure out where you are going to live next year? Starting March 3, 2008 you will be able to choose on-campus housing accommodations for the 2008-2009 academic year. It's as simple as logging in, completing the application, and choosing your hall or cooperative house (co-op). For the residence halls, you will be able to select your specific room via an interactive floor plan*. You'll also be able to accept the terms and conditions of the housing contract online-no more form to turn in.

*Co-op rooms are assigned individually by the executive council. Contact your specific house for more information.

    New Students
Are you worried about where you will be assigned to live? At Oregon State University, it's up to you! OSU is the first university in the area to allow incoming students to select their own residence hall or co-op.

Beginning March 17, 2008, as long as your application has been completed and processed, you'll be able to log back in and choose your hall or co-op*. For the residence halls, you will be able to select your specific room via an interactive floor plan. If you have already chosen a roommate, you'll now be able to invite them into the room with you once your room is selected. By choosing OSU, you'll be one of the first in your class to have a housing assignment.

Gender Inclusive/Apartment-Style Living

For upper-class/transfer students who want an apartment style living option without having to live off campus, UHDS offers apartment-style assignments in Halsell Hall. What does this mean? In simple terms, it means that anyone can choose to live in a room or suite with anyone else. Students can choose to live with each other without restriction based on gender identification. This living environment can accommodate students who desire to live with friends and family, regardless of gender, and was supported by an ASOSU proposal asking for gender inclusive housing options.

Group Room Selection

Can't decide on only one person to choose as a roommate? Is there a particular group of people whom you would like to live near? The Group Selection process allows you to create clusters of friends and acquaintances within the hall communities by forming and joining groups. In addition, the group of students then receives priority in selecting the group's building of choice.

To create a group, you'll need a name, description, and building preference. Once your group has at least six (6) students, it will become active. Groups are limited to 16 members. The group owner will be able to invite other students into the group, and groups are searchable. The owner has the ability to accept or reject group membership requests. Groups can contain all genders, but all group members must be in the same application period.

Once a group is active, members will be eligible to select rooms within the group's building preference prior to the start of open room selection. For returning student groups, room selection will be March 5-6, 2008. For new student groups, room selection will be March 14, 2008.

Health and Human Sciences Living in Community (LinC - LIVE)

Buxton and Hawley halls serve as a residential community for students studying or interested in majors within the College of Health and Human Sciences (HHS). First-year residents create a living environment related to majors of interest in the college such as Nutrition and Exercise Science, Public Health, Human Development and Family Sciences or Design and Human Environment. Along with working with a Faculty-in-Residence from the college, there is an opportunity for instant study groups or advising sessions by HHS staff. Hall dinners, networking with upper-division HHS student leaders, seminars and other informal interactions include presentations by faculty on issues related to relationships, healthy living, nutrition and exercise.

Personalization of Space - Accent Walls

Want to spice up your living environment with some color? Students will be provided the opportunity to paint one accent wall (typically the wall with the window) for next year at no additional cost! Specific color palettes that you will be able to choose from are being created for each hall. UHDS Operations and Facilities staff will supply the paint and supplies and will supervise the process as you create your home away from home.

Term by Term (One Term) Contract

Prefer to contract term by term? Cauthorn Hall will be available starting Fall 2008 for term by term/one term contracts. Students who choose this option agree to complete the entire academic term of the UHDS Contract, with the option to renew the contract for subsequent terms. Note that there is an additional cost for the contract flexibility. The academic terms run from September 21, 2008 - December 12, 2008 (Fall), January 4, 2009 - March 20, 2009 (Winter), March 29, 2009 - June 12, 2009 (Spring).

Transfer & Upper-class Experience

Halsell Hall is the home of our Upper-class Experience program geared towards providing upper-class students the tools and opportunities to prepare for the future after college. The programs focuses on five distinct areas: career planning; leadership and involvement; academic enhancement; experiencing diversity; and enhancing community.
