You must register with the web site to use its career database, but there is no charge for registration. Has an interesting career quiz, the results of which provide you with links to detailed descriptions of several careers.

http://www.nycareerzone.org/text/index.jsp - Put together by the New York state department of labor. Categorizes occupations into six clusters. Has pretty comprehensive list of careers, and you can use the links to find some good information, especially in the areas of tasks, skills, knowledge, and education. Keep in mind that some of the info (e.g. salary) is specific to New York state, so it may not be entirely representative of other states.

http://www.acinet.org/acinet/ - A comprehensive source of occupational information, with many links. It even has video presentations for 200 different careers.

The career information on this site is very "statistic" driven and less narrative, but you still might find something useful. Affiliated with the acinet.org site.
