Introduction to Advising Services

The University Exploratory Studies Program (UESP) is the academic home for students who have chosen to explore their options prior to deciding on a major. UESP is very similar to OSU's academic colleges in that we provide academic support to assure that our students are making satisfactory progress toward a degree. We offer a comprehensive range of services to help students make informed decisions about their academic coursework and potential majors they're considering.

These services include:

*Individual advising appointments with trained advisors.

*Assistance with choosing a major and other forms of academic counseling.

*Help with understanding OSU's academic policies and regulations.

*Assistance with web registration and scheduling issues.

*UESP advisors (together with their colleagues across campus) aim to assist students in the process of fulfilling numerous learning outcomes while they are at OSU. Follow this link to read more about OSU advising and established student learning outcomes.

*ALS 114 Career Decision Making - Our advisors coordinate and team-teach this two-credit letter-graded class. It provides OSU freshmen and sophomores with guided career exploration in a classroom setting and is offered fall, winter, spring, and summer terms. It is available both on-campus and on-line.

*Access to Discover, a Web-based career exploration and planning module supported by UESP and Career Services.

*UESP is located in the Academic Success Center and is staffed by three full time academic advisors and two graduate assistants. We also have other trained advisors who assist during peak advising times in the second half of each term. The full time advisors and the 2006-2007 graduate assistants are:

Kerry started with UESP as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in 1999, was hired as a full time advisor in 2001, and has been Head Advisor since July of 2004. Prior to joining UESP, Kerry worked as an adjunct English instructor at Parkland College in Champaign, IL and also spent time in retail management working for Borders Books and Music in Illinois and Oregon. Fun facts: As a child, Kerry was on the Today show doing arts and crafts as part of a feature story about the local Arts Council in his Nebraska hometown. He currently expresses himself artistically through playing bass guitar for the band "Easterly" from Salem, OR.

Mary is currently in her second year of the Master's in Counseling program through the College of Education. She has four wonderful kids; the youngest will graduate from high school at the same time Mary finishes her master's degree. Mary started volunteering as a Peer Academic Coach in the Academic Success Center in 2005. In 2006, she was hired to continue coaching, and has also worked with the BEST program (summer program for student athletes transitioning to OSU) and the learning strategist program. While at LCC, Mary was a student worker in the Women’s Program, coordinated a mentor program linking middle school girls with women majoring in science, was a peer assistant in the career center and received Lane's Outstanding Student Scholar award. Mary is now a graduate assistant with the Academic Success Center and UESP. She works as an advisor, an academic coach, and is involved in hiring and supporting other coaches and learning strategists.
